It may be coincidence, but it seems to me that the last few days have seen more spam threads with links to porn and other trash. is this a function of the change in software, or just a coincidence?

Re: under attack from spammers
It probably is.
The registration captcha requirement is still there, so I suspect what has happened is that the spammers have managed to crack the capacha hash and thus now can robotically create IDs and post again.
This is a tough one for Vbulletin to take care of, and they're going to have to (the people who write this software); if they don't then vBulletin will go straight down the drain as a viable message board package eventually - it is just a matter of time.http://www.denninger.net - Home page with blog links and more

I thought there were some senior members with admin rights, i.e. they could smoke the hokey/obnoxious threads...what is that situation?

We are smoking them, not that the "smoke" function is working again.
