K.I.S.S.
keep it simple stupid
I'm starting this thread to explore how hatt owners have made complex systems or process' on there boats simpler and more reliable. it has to be more simple than originally manufactured.
as for me I have several but the one that came to mind regarding this thread was this. my boat had ammeters on both helms. all energy produced by the alternators had to go through these guages before getting to the batts or other load (no shunt). I upgraded to 160 amp leece neville atls turned on by the fuel pressure switch and installed basic voltmeters. the alts feed to distribution blocks, and from there to the batts,so there is no possibility to burn the alts by opening the output line. works well and simple. how about you?

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
I removed the buss fuses and the holders. I removed the isolation tranformer and all the wiring. Removing all that stuff saved over 600 lbs and simplified everything.
Many members have had problems with the fuses that shut them down or blew the fuse over and over again. I have not had a problem with any of that.
Since doing this I have not missed the ability to get 220 out of the 110 volt shorepower cord.
Maybe someday I'll miss the isolation transformer but not so far.

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
Personally, I do not think it is good to reengineer something that works well unless you are an engineer. When you start messing with this stuff it no longer matches the origional diagrams and that could be a real issue down the road. I may not understand why it was done that way but the guys who made these boats were purdy fart smellers

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
I'm a mechanical and electrical engineer. Don't be fooled these boats were built by folks that were not. They were designed by some but built by others. You can make a lot of improvements by thinking them through to the enth degree.
These are after all production line boats. These were not custom built boats. Anytime production comes into play some things are done to save time or save money.
20 years or more ago they did not have some of the cool stuff we have now as far as sealers 5200 etc etc. Wireless remotes. I've shaved at least 1,300 lbs off of my boat by removing stuff that you can really do without.
I expected to see a performance increse but that didn't happen but what did happen was the fuel consumption went down

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
Hmm - It's funny how we are all a bit different in our aproaches to things. I have found that most of Hatt's design/execution is as bulletproof as you get on a boat. Therefore, other than electronic equipment - nav/comm/computer, etc - I tend to go the opposite direction and eschew "new" and, in my mind, not-as-good stuff.
I haven't had a second's trouble with the elec system on our 53 which makes the elec system on other boat's I've owned (and any house I've owned) look amateurish. So I can't identify with the shortcomings identified.
So I haven't found a reason to "improve" anything on the boat! I did "unimprove" some of the PO's stuff and put it back to oem!

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
I agree with MikeP. The only things that have caused me any trouble have been things that were not OEM. Maybe the 1980's boats had some improvements over earlier models. I don't know. I seem to remember Pascoe complaining about the electrical from the American Rockwell years. I'll have to see if I can find that again.

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
While most of the "modifications" I've done to my boat have been to set the PO's mods back to original Hatt configuration, (they did it right the first time) I like my extra battery banks. Offshore, more capacity is better.

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
There are upgrades as we all know. My 1966 vessel would not have had GPS or other electronics like available today. There would be some changes to make things better but the changes need to be well thought out.

Re: K.I.S.S. principle
Most of what was OEM on Gigabite was fine. There were things I would have done differently, but that was due to lack of technology at the time (since fixed), and those things I DID fix.
Now PO "fun stuff" was another matter. I lost count of how much wire I ripped out of the boat - none of it original - and none of it doing anything useful.
