I looked in the service manual and can't find anything on the correct way to check the oil level on my 453 naturals which have the oil filter mounted upside down. I've been running the engines and check the oil level as soon as someone shuts the engine down. My thinking was the oil filter needs to be filled as if it were mounted upright. The service manual states to wait about 20 minutes after shut down to check the oil level. Can anyone give any insight to how I should be checking this.
Thanks,

Re: Oil Filter mounted upside down
You HAVE TO wait, as there is a lot of oil in the galleries and such when the engine is shut down that has to drain back.
IMHO the right way to do this is to get the published capacity numbers for the engine, drain the engine entirely, add that amount and run it for a couple of minutes.
Then turn it off and wait a half-hour. Come back and see where it is on the stick. Now you know where it should be, given the engine's actual capacity.http://www.denninger.net - Home page with blog links and more

Thanks for the reply Karl. Should have done that at last oil change. Just changed the oil. Should have asked the question before changing. Thanks Again.
