Good morning all,
I'm Italian new forum joiner, I used to own a couple of Boston Whalers (17 first and 22 until last november) and I would like to step up significantly in dimensions and the chance to spend more time at anchor and cruising in the Mediterranean sea.
I saw different boats from a 35 Bertram to a 325 Albemarle (but all in pretty bad shape). Now I may have found a 1984 Hatteras 36 Convertible and I will go and check it out in Neaples over the next few weeks.
After being refitted between 2014 and 2017 it has been sitting two years on the hard, it should have rebuilt Detroit 6-71 with approx 180 hours on the clock.
I would have a couple of questions for you:Thank you all in advance for your support and greetings from Milan!
- I could not find the 6-71 rated at 325 hp, is the owner wrong about his statement? Do they exist?
- What are the weak points I should pay particular attention to? Both on the engines and the boat?
- After two years on the hard (and I assume the engines have never been started) I would ask to clean the tanks and change all the oils and liquids before testing it into the water. Anything else you may suggest?
- As for fuel consumption, I understand that the 6-71 are pretty thirsty, should I expect 20 to 25 gallons / hour at 17 knots right? Here Diesel goes for about 2 Euros per liter...

Pre-purchase 1984 Hatteras 36 Convertible - Questions

Re: Pre-purchase 1984 Hatteras 36 Convertible - Questions
Welcome to the forum!
I believe those boats had 6-71Ns, which are very durable engines if maintained according to the recommendations of the engine builder.
You should have the boat surveyed by a hull surveyor familiar with Hatteras yachts, and an engine surveyor familiar with Detroits. Also, make sure you have a sea trial and that the surveyors are along for it.
The Series 2 36 Hatteras boats were sturdy boats with a lot of interior room for their length, and not particularly fast. The speed sounds about right, and the fuel consumption also.
If there is a 'for sale' thread that you can post a link to, you might get additional feedback.

You might want to also request the raw water impellers be changed before sea trial. Two years in one position and who knows how old before that and they may just break apart or produce little water flow when engines are under load. .

I ran a boat for years that had a pair of 6-71Ns. At 1800 rpm they burned 10 gallons an hour for the pair. I don’t know what they would burns an hour if you had to run them at 2300 rpm.

Re: Pre-purchase 1984 Hatteras 36 Convertible - Questions
Thank you all for your contribution.
First visit is set on the next 2nd March. The boat will not go to the water before May, so plenty of time for pre-purchase inspections.
I heard the yard today and all the owner said so far has been confirmed and it appears the current owner is a "maniac" pampering the boat.
Finger crossed!
Thank you again all
Talk to you soon!
(still looking for "For sale" thread on the 36...so many pages!)

Re: Pre-purchase 1984 Hatteras 36 Convertible - Questions
And I am back!
The boat looks ok, not perfect but ok.
If we agree on the price I will send two inspectors (one for the boat and one Detroit specialist).
Meanwhile I saw some corrosion on the alluminium window frames and a couple of them may have minor leaks. I have been searching in the forum and I have seen that is a recurring issue.
Most of the companies offering solutions are USA based (obviously) but need to work "on site", and that is simply impossible with a boat sitting in Italy.
Is it really impossible to find a standard set (it does not matter to me whether made in aluminium extrusion or fiberglass) to be sent overseas?
Any tips from the community?
Thank you in advance!
Ciao
Andrew

Re: Pre-purchase 1984 Hatteras 36 Convertible - Questions
I have looked all over for an aluminum extrusion to make a “fixed” window. Taco metals used to sell an extrusion in the 90s but it is no longer in their catalog. You might be able to contact a company that makes fixed windows and see if they will ship the frames without the glass to save on shipping.

Send a template of the cutout, and they will make the window to fit.Sky Cheney

Sams has the extrusions to make a window. Just search 'extrusion'
