I have a 1976 Hatteras 48 LRC with old Gross Mech (now Groco) raw water strainers for the 4-53 Detroit Diesels. The baskets are deteriorating and I'm trying to find replacements. I've not had any luck with replacements going through Groco, Sam's or Fisheries Supply. They suggest replacing the water strainers; the closest replacement is a Groco SA-1500. However I'd much prefer to spend less money on replacement baskets rather than replace the entire raw water strainer body and all. The baskets are 3" in diameter and 8" tall. Any suggestions who might sell just the baskets?

Re: Looking for replacement raw water strainer baskets
You might possibly have better luck with Groco if you ask to speak to Don Gross, who is the owner of the company. I'm a little surprised they don't make anything that would work, but perhaps you could persuade him to make them for you. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Many sheet metal shops or machine shops can fab those. I used to make lots of them for the inland tow boat companies. We would make them from monel or 316L stainless.

Annnnnd I'm just going with the standard answer which is,...
Throw those things overboard, install a set of South Bay strainers and call it a day.
Do a search here. It's all been done before.

Re: Looking for replacement raw water strainer baskets
A quick summary to this problem. Larry, at Fisheries Supply, let me know that the number I was looking for was not a model number but a casting number. After some further scraping on the strainer body, I found the part number and Larry offered me a simple and inexpensive solution.
Thanks to everyone who commented on this forum entry.

Or do a search on Amazon. When I needed to install a new strainer for my marine AC's I bought the Groco thru Amazon.

Re: Looking for replacement raw water strainer baskets
I need to change the gaskets in one of my stainers and purchased the cork replacements. Is it easy to do? I always worry when starting to disassemble an old unit while the boat is in the water. Will obviously close the sea cock.
