Mystery engine part..! Johnson and Towers 6-71

Not my engine, but better pics, anyone know what the thing that is circled is?

I have this configuration of pedestal mounted, belt driven raw water pump and the bracket is giving me trouble.

Noticing this thing that is behind it, I am just curious what it is, it isn't plumbed to anything external, and most engines don't seem to have them?

    Thanks!

    Re: Johnson and Towers 6-71

So I guess it is a crankcase breather, Detroit Diesel 5173729.

The reason why I am asking is because I don't see them on all engines.

Anyway, what is happening is, the pedestal that the raw water pump is setting on shares a bolt with that breather, and it just isn't a good way of attaching and it is letting the belts pull the raw water pump forward slightly.

It is just a bad arrangement, although I guess it has lasted 50 yrs so far.

But there are two bolts and two belts on the front side, and only one bolt on the back, and that bolt on the back is starting to strip out.

Seems the mount doesn't really mount flat, which kind of loads that bolt.

Seems a strange design, I guess I'll have to look at the other engine, but I am sure it is the same way...

Belt was getting loose on this side and that seems to be why.

In the bottom pic, The raw water pump is sharing the for/bottom bolt of the case breather assembly. Probably the raw water pump bracket is askew and not flat on all mounting points.

I suspect some spacers are missing under the other raw water mounting bracket mounting points.

A fist full of washers could help square the bracket to the block.

Would J&T have an IPB* to illustrate this?

Yea, that is my thought as well.

Except that, this stuff has been like this for years...

I guess I'll have to check the other side.
