Thread: Intercoolers

    Intercoolers

I pulled my intercoolers for cleaning. It is a pretty easy job, 20 bolts and nuts of which 19 were very easy to remove. One of course was almost impossible to get a wrench on and required me to make up this tool to remove it. Just a normal boat job.

Remember grease on fresh hose connections & Tef-Gel on the machine bolts during re-assembly. Next service will go much smoother.

Thanks Ralph, it was very surprising how easy the bolts came out, I guess the last person to do them used your advice.

    Re: Intercoolers

So, fill us in; why were they removed? Lots of crust in the raw water side?
Lots of turbo crud on the charged air side?

It was cold and you needed to be abused?

    Re: Intercoolers

Really bad water flow on the outboard side of one engine. I had just done the main HE so I knew it had to be something else and the Intercooler on that side was really plugged up. We have a great radiator shop here that does tons of HE’s.

It's good to have a local shop like yours.
So many shops are closing up around here.

    Keep us up.

    Re: Intercoolers

Just took my intercoolers to the radiator shop where they had maybe 2 radiators and about 30 heat exchangers, many of which were from Detroit’s. I think I am in good hands.

    Re: Intercoolers

Would the acid flush have cured that? I used to flush through the whole system except the transmission heat exchanger.

    Re: Intercoolers

Probably would have if it would have been done on a regular bases, but it wasn’t.
