This was a replacement of existing with a rebuilt.
Meanwhile I have rebuilt the piston. I will finish documenting this on my blog after I test it. It didn't look too bad inside.
In fact after thinking about this, it may well be the malfunctioning MSV21 that allowed higher pressure on the stop than the seals could contain. Relief pressure is 950 psi. That said, the piston is said by the manufacturer to be good to 4000+psi.
I have a new MSV21, might as well put it in and be sure it's doing its part.

Epilogue: It's all back together and working properly. Here's some pictures and comments for those that will be dealing with this in the future.
