Thread: Flir

    Flir

Does anyone have a recommendation for a FLIR product or night vision goggles?

I read Pascal's earlier thread about his and that doesn't seem to appealing.

My main mission is running Tampa-Key West 24 hours each way. It's easy with little traffic but I fear Hurricane Ian debris may make the night time portion of the cruise more risky.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I don’t think flir is going to help with debris especially if it’s submerged.

I remember going to boat shows back in the 90’s and going in the ITT booth with their night vision binoculars. It was pretty impressive but expensive. Then there was all that cheap Russian generation 1&2 stuff that flooded the markets never see any of that stuff anymore.

That's because if it held up as well as the rest of their military gear has in Ukraine, it probably broke 10 minutes later.

Not sure which thread you saw… at the risk of repeating myself or worst contradicting myself…

FLIR is great when running in an enclosed pilot house or enclosed FB as long as you have dedicated monitor, at least 16”. If you have to display it on a quarter of an MFD shared with radar and plotter, it s pretty useless

I think the best is still FLIR which is now owned by raymarine. The basic unit is fine, forgot the model nr.

Now on an open FB, I m not sure I see the need.

It will detect day markers and stuff almost 1/4 mile away but it will not show pits and debris.
