I replaced all my 4/0 wiring and I took the old stuff out and cut it up and removed the insulation on a bunch of it.
Lots of it looked brand new and lots of it was very disintegrated.
I didn't note what part of the cable was what, but, you couldn't tell from the outside that the inside was so bad in many spots.
After 50 yrs, or whatever, now at least I have red and yellow cables.

Re: Battery cables 4-0 seems like overkill
Mines were probably original and not tinned and had some corrosion. They also had longer than needed runs with the old blade style switches high up on the wall. I installed new battery switches just inside the door entrances, saves about 8’ of cables per engines.

Re: Battery cables 4-0 seems like overkill
Moisture. Corrosion. Engine starting problems eliminated when heavy duty jumper cables used to bi pass circuits ..the rot at the lugs was so bad that the cable was hanging by some sheathing

Re: Battery cables 4-0 seems like overkill
Cable does not wear out. The insulation around it can and allows it to corrode. I've seen cable in older boats in great shape and I've seen cable in newer boats falling apart. Good cable is not made in China. Good crimps are hexagonal or square and not the half-moon.
I use xtra heavy duty crimps and heavy glue lined shrink. Not the basic ancor stuff. More like the Thomas and Betts 4012 crimps
I also use a square (aircraft type) crimp tool made to work with these specific crimps and American made cable. They are all double crimped and pull tested.
By the way I order 5-700 crimps 3 or 4 times a year.Scott

I guess he doesn't like Krush. This happens when people make judgements without knowing the person. One of the drawbacks of the internet, I guess. I'm sure the conversation would be much different on the dock.
Krush is a good guy. Intelligent, a Hatteras owner, and quite well traveled. He's done more at his young age than many do in a lifetime.Last edited by SKYCHENEY; 09-20-2022 at 09:47 PM.

Intolerance for idiots.
Cables don't have issues thru their life is a sign of stupidity.
Bad cables not only fail and options stop working but can start fires and threaten life on boat.
I get upset when morons don't recognize simple things.
I found that ignore tab. Anybody don't appreciate my thoughts can ignore me.Last edited by Captain Ralph; 09-20-2022 at 10:02 PM.

Maybe this is why participation is down here. Moderators letting people on here that call members morons and idiots probably doesn't help. I've seen people get banned from this site for much less offensive behavior, yet this is allowed over and over again from you.
You need to learn to play nice, Ralph.Sky Cheney
