Thread: Dirty Dash

    Dirty Dash

When I first bought my 53 I could barely read the engraving on the dash. I decided to get some white shoe polish and some White Out and rub it in. My hope was to make the lettering pop. It didn’t work, it made more of a mess than anything else. I had to clean it out so I grabbed some kaboom and an old toothbrush and tried get the White Out, out of the grooves. Lo and behold when I scrubbed and wiped it off it was like they were brand new again. Turns out the engraving had 40 years worth of dirt inside of them. I didn’t post anything about this when I did it, but I was visiting a friend an noticed their engraving was just as dark. I told them what I had done and the following is 10 minutes worth of their cleaning. Just beautiful.

I used Baking soda and white vinegar for those who don’t like the smell of kaboom.

Oh is THAT what's wrong with my dash? I thought the lettering had flaked off or something, it's all black and you can barely read it. I am definitely doing this over the weekend.

    Re: Dirty Dash

My solution was to just cover the old dash up.

Sky, that is a fantastic upgrade. What is the black material?

Its ColorCore Starboard. We ran it on a CNC router, then heated and bent it to fit. I used the same stuff on the upper helm.

That's neato - gives me a lot of project ideas.
