    Re: MTU 16V2000 in frame

As I have said many many times there is a HUGE difference. At 9 kts a 70 footer should get 1 NMPG or very close. At 11kts it will be more like 17/18gph as it will Be above hull speed.

Now 9kts may keep the engines a little too cool if run for extended period of times

What part of Tstats not closing makes me wonder about that?

Why would they run too cool and do think that could cause damage over time if you ran it like a trawler? I figured it would be just like if you’re fishing/trawling for 8-10 hours. Should be good to run at 9knots so long as every 10hours run it at cruise for 15min to bring the temps up and then slow it back down?ThanksTony

4000 hours is ridiculous. Guys with cats in commercial boats are getting 10-12000 hours

    Re: MTU 16V2000 in frame

The old yacht club I belonged to had a rule where all boats were required to cast off, motor down to the confluence of two rivers a mile away, then motor back. Don't do the sea trial once, and you're on probation. Don't do it two years in a row, and they'd boot you off the docks.

I noticed a pattern that the guys who lived on gas boats had mechanics aboard at the end of the season every year, trying to get the engines running well enough to make the trip. Other than that, they never left their slips. They'd spend $1000-1500 on mechanics, new carbs, fuel pumps, etc, and stink up the whole channel with the smell of old gas making that one trip, then let the boats sit fallow for the next 11-1/2 months. They wouldn't fuel up and take their boats out because they were cheap...or so they thought.

If they instead had bought 100 gallons of gas in the spring and run it through the boat over the summer, they'd save themselves $600-1000/yr in mechanic fees.

Given the cost of rebuilding diesel engines that don't get run like commercial trawlers, it seems like you'd save money running 200 gallons of diesel (even at today's insane prices) through per year than killing them through disuse.

I agree but Apparently it’s common on these engines unless they ve really been babied. This was made worst on that stbd engine by apparent damage apparently from a raw water leak.

I ve run Cat 3412Es and C32s with a lot more hours…. Although I doubt the new 2000 hp and over versions of the C32 will get much more than 4000 hours.
