The starboard side lid on my 1988 38c seems to have had the coring rot out where the hinges screw in on the back. Anyone have one laying around from a junked boat or suggestions to repair

Starboard tackle center lid replacement

Re: Starboard tackle center lid replacement
Easy fix just as long as all of the coring isn't gone. There's many ways to fix the lid, if you're not familiar with fiberglass repair the easiest fix is to open up (remove) the fiberglass skin where the hinge sits between the top and bottom layers of fiberglass. Dig out the rotted balsa, dry out and clean the area, cut a piece of teak or PVC or G10 to fit opening and epoxy the piece into the opening. Coat the replacement core with epoxy and prime and paint.
If all of the balsa is gone then you're going to have to cut out the entire underneath fiberglass skin and replace coring, I like Coosa for coring, it's also nice to have some pvc or teak or G10 behind the skin where the hinge goes so the screws can have a better bite.
Btw, pretty easy repair for a fiberglass shop.Last edited by Cricket; 06-01-2022 at 01:59 PM.
