So I headed offshore Wed morning looking for the daytime chunk bite that had been going on for a week or two near the Coimbra wreck. Well, when we got to the area it was clear that the bite (and fleet) had moved on, so we motored to the Dip area and loaded up the cooler with nice mahi.
Other than the mahi, the dip didnt look particularly interesting, so we steamed east to Fishtails, where we trolled unproductively for a couple hours. At dusk we trolled south into Block Canyon and set up for tuna and swords in 1700fow. Managed two big (65#) albies overnight and then trolled up a 60# yellow and another half dozen smaller albies. All in all, not a bad trip for a single overnighter with abruptly changed plans.
It got a bit more interesting on the way in. As we passed Montauk I turned off airplane mode on my phone and started to text a couple buddies who were heading out and wanted fresh intel, when the phone rang with an incoming call from my daughter Katie. When I answered, she said "Hi Grandpa". It seems that our first grandchild didn't have the patience to wait for the C-section scheduled for Oct 27. Yup. I was out fishing when our first grandchild was born. Oops.
Here's Katie and Valerie Mae, plus a couple of their friends.

Nice catch. A little small, but I wouldn't throw it back.
