    In reading the story, one thought was that he crossed the German Military and would not share areas of his research; they may have retaliated somehow.. Interestingly, Tesla crossed horns with government somehow. The US stripped him of all papers, research, etc., and he lived out his life penniless in a cheap hotel. Maybe someone has better details. So arguably the man who gave the world AC power, and other leading concepts, possible TV and radio (yes, I know Marconi and others get credit), had nothing to show for his brilliance.
