It is hard to tell from the photo but it could be a "water presser regulator valve". Google it and see if you can find it on line. The valves regulate the water pressure so it is not too high and blows a water line. They are relatively inexpensive and available at most building and hardware stores.

Yes, water pressure regulator. I didn't realize I had one when I added one. I'm pretty sure this one isn't working.

With a check valve above it (upstream in this case). Is it mounted on the horizontal?
