Running on oil..... and there's quite a bit in there. Guess they don't have an air shutoff?

Fortunately it seized up. At least it wasn't running backwards.

Re: Things you don't want to see offshore
Having worked around diesel engines my whole life and seeing two run-aways the first thing I checked when we purchased Lightfoot was the operation of the blower dampers on the 671's both worked fine, shutting off the air is about the only way to stop a run-away

Re: Things you don't want to see offshore
A broker we met told me the story about his boat. He's up in Ct and winters in Fla. Had a beautiful 42 bertram with 6-92's for 14+ years. Would bring the boat to fla when he went down. Had the engines done in Fla, but after the rebuild they couldn't get them to rated rpm. So he goes back to Ct while they're trying to trouble shoot the engines, Gets a phone call from a boat tow company, asking are about him and the boat. He says i'm in Ct, what are you talking about? They send him a link, and he see's his boat burning to the water line in real time down in fla. Mech's were trying to get them to rated rpm and one ran away and couldn't shut it down. too bad, was a beautiful boat.
I only hear about DD's sometimes running away. Is it a 2 stroke issue, a dd design issue, or can it happen to any diesel? Still love a 2 stroke dd tho
