    Holding Tank Maintenance

Getting ready to do some holding tank upgrades 1) Replaced the 3/4 light with a TankWatch 4-Level Tank Monitor System (empty, 1/4, 1/2/ 3/4, full) and 2) Replace the waste extraction/suction pipe in the holding tank to a non-metallic material. I heard rumor that Hatteras at some point, moved to non-metallic material. If this is true, does anyone know what year did the change take place?

Hoping, I don’t have to change out the extraction/suction pipe....

Trying to set my expectations of what I am getting myself into.... Thanks!
    Best regards,

    Re: Holding Tank Maintenance

I don’t have the year they switched but it’s an easy way to check. Slowly loosen the exit tube and pull it up an inch or two. Since you’re changing everything else it’s a good idea to check it out. If it’s metal switch it to a heavy gauge PVC plastic tube with an angle cut just above the bottom of the tank. Flush the tank as good as you can and add odor chemicals so you won’t get knocked out once you open the tube. Good luck it’s a fun job.

    Re: Holding Tank Maintenance

On my 1980 built Hatteras 37 the extraction/suction pipe was thin brass which failed miserably (pitted and holed at the top ) in 2016 and I replaced it with a PVC pipe. As mentioned, try and prep the tank with chemicals before opening. I use Noflex Digestor with great success.

Not sure what will you achieve with 4 level tank monitor. I am happy with my original 3/4 full with red light coming on in the head. Gives me time to plan the trip to closest pump-out if I want to continue cruising.

Absolutely correct with the Digester. Flush a half jar down the toilet and when you open the hatch there will not be any smell at all.

    Re: Holding Tank Maintenance

Appreciate the insights and tips. Ours is a 1994, so hoping this was addressed in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Will know for sure once everything is opened up....

It's not a bad job, at least it wasn't on my 43.

1985 had a schedule 80 PVC drop tube, so I would think you are okay.
