Thread: 53MY Market

    53MY Market

I’m seeing junk and overpriced boats I view as mediocre at best. Even those priced in the mid-200’s don’t seem like anything that special, and nicer, newer and larger Hatt’s are going for that or less.

    What’s the dang deal here?

High demand for the best MY they ever built.

Just kiddin ya. I think they probably are in higher demand than the larger MY though, because its much easier to find slips for a 53 with a 16' beam than a bigger MY with an 18' beam.

I’ll buy into a lot of that, but that changes little about what I’m seeing. Maybe I just haven’t noticed this trend because I haven’t been in the market. They used to be everywhere.

I agree 100%. I’d love a bigger Hatteras but I can’t take it very many places up here do to length and beam.

Same reason I've kept mine for 16 years. So, maybe that's why others are hanging on to them too.

But are they selling? Seems used boat prices have gone up as fuel prices have fallen and the economy improved but I think that it’s just irrational exuberance on the sellers parts. Maybe a few primo boats have brought a premium but now the guy with the garbage scow thinks his is worth more

Selling is the key. Same boats on the market for the past couple of months that I’ve been looking.

Is it a regional issue? Average boat sizes have been going up and many marinas have adapted to offer bigger slips at least in SoFl / Bahamas. A 19’ beam isn’t an issue down here even though permanent dockage in general can be hard to find

Some are selling, and comps are showing reasonable prices, IF they are to be believed. Others are listed forever. for a variety of reasons from the simple being over priced, to brokers that have poor table manners and turn people off. Time on market is lengthy, with a few, very well priced, exceptions.

There IS a market for them, but it's a niche market. Remember we're talking 40+ year old boats here. In the automotive world that's a "hobby".

I agree with the beam issue, I sit on a T-dock. When you need a 20 ft wide dock you’re in with the big guys and all the costs that go with it. I think the reason that you don’t see a lot of nice boats is that they sell by word of mouth before they are listed. This forum contributes to that. Everyone reading this forum knows how hard it is to replace old hoses ,wiring and the rest. A well maintained boat is worth some premium. Unfortunately , most boats like ours lost their full time captain when the first owner left.
