    I've got a 32v 20kw MDL4 on my boat. It's a 24v starter. This the starter I have. 191-1604

I'd love to know how you got it to mount, I have the exact one and can't get it to pull tight due to the clearance. I've read there is an adapter flange for the land based genny's, did you have to use one or direct fit? Did it require shimming?

Thanks for the parts link, great help!!

    Re: Onan starter

When I bought my boat, it had a 24v starter on the Onan MDL4 (32v system). As stated, be careful of the alignment of the gears as mine eventually chewed up the ring gear. I didn't know I had a problem until it just spun with no start. I replaced the ring gear and still couldn't get that starter to line up right. Eventually I just replaced the whole generator.

    Re: Onan starter

I wasn't about to let this thing kick my ass if there was anyway I could make it work. I took my dremel to the two points that seem to inhibit the starter from pulling flush. Got her all wired up and vwala... she spun over and cranked right up. I pulled it back off to look at the teeth on both the starter and the ring gear and they appear happy. I'll give it another shot tomorrow and update. Thanks for all the responses

    Re: Onan starter

you may try spraying some paint on the teeth of the starter then install and start it to be able to see the wear pattern. works great on rear end set up in cars
