    Hilton Head To Annapolis

Not exactly the greatest time of year to make this trip in a convertible (46C), but it just is what it is.

I've charted this thing out and will be running hull speed via the ICW, but I'm looking for personal input on favorite marinas that are spaced about 100 miles apart. Departure date at this point looks to be 12/13, and this is the itinerary I've come up with. Feel free to make suggestions, but I think River Forest and Coinjock are musts. The others just happen to fall within the distance parameters. These are obviously subject to change, but they should be doable in daylight hours. We can always push up the throttles if needed.

Day 1 - Isle of Palms Marina MM 456.5

    Day 2 - Barefoot Marina MM 354

    Day 3 - New River Marina - MM 247

    Day 4 - River Forest Marina - MM 136

    Day 5 - Coinjock Marina - MM 50

Day 6 - Davis Wharf Marina, Belle Haven, VA

    Day 7 - Annapolis

The only worry from HH to Chas. is the Dawho River section leading onto the N. Edisto. Tows frequently destroy or relocate the marks because of the tight maneuvering in there. Most of the rest of it has been dredged.

IOP is OK, but I gotta tell you that LNM for some time has been showing 2' between Sullivans Is. and IOP.

SOUTH CAROLINA - AICW - CASINO CREEK TO BEAUFORT RIVER - WINYAH BAY - CHARLESTON HARBOR: Severe Shoaling. There is severe shoaling at low-tide depths of 2ft across the AICW in the vicinity of Isle of Palms between Winyah Bay-Charleston HarborDaybeacon 117A (LLNR 34510.5) 32-47-11.607N / 079-48-33.383W and Winyah Bay-Charleston Harbor Daybeacon 119 (LLNR 34520) 32-46-49.809N / 079-49-23.561W. Mariners are advised to use extreme caution while transiting the area.

SOUTH CAROLINA – AICW – CASINO CREEK TO BEAUFORT RIVER – WINYAH BAY - CHARLESTON HARBOR: Shoaling Extended.
Shoaling has been reported in the vicinity of Winyah Bay-Charleston Harbor Light 35 (LLNR 34235) and Daybeacon 42 (LLNR 34260). The reporting source also indicates that the depth of the water between Winyah Bay-Charleston Light 38 (LLNR 34245) and Daybeacon 42 (LLNR 34260) is approximately 4ft; however, the depth is charted at 7ft. The ACOE has no future plans for dredging due to budget restrictions. Further information can be found on the ACOE Charleston website http://www.sac.usace.army.mil/ Mariners are advised to use extreme caution while transiting the area. I heard less from SeaTow.

If you get past IOP you'll need to stop the night otherwise you probably won't make it through the shoaling near McClellanville. If you do, Leland Oil is by far your best bet for good quality cheap diesel. I like Waca Wace on the Wacamaw above Georgetown. Good restaurant at Georgetown Landing Marina, however.

Wrightsville Marina is tops and a must in my book. Hope this helps.

Thanks Robert. I haven’t checked notices yet, and it would tickle me if the weather allows running outside. We’ll make that determination the night before.

Anybody know if there’s a REAL NC Carolina BBQ joint on the ICW? I could use a fix.

Haven’t gone north on ICW from Charleston but one time in four years. That was four years ago. It’s been dredged twice but fills right back in. N.C. BBQ? Yuck

bridges at wrightsville and figure 8 are purposely unsynchronized. Agree with Robert. Stop in Wrightsville. Unless on demand off season.

Georgetown used to have a BBQ shack with in walking distance that sold it by the pound and gave you a bag of potato rolls. Once you get north of Charleston not much point in running outside. You could make Southport but days are short and not a lot of places to duck in without local knowledge. the North Atlantic in the winter is not a good place to be trying to feel your way in a strange inlet in the dark. There is a good reason that area is known as the graveyard of the Atlantic. Gulf Stream is running hard right now you won’t be far enough offshore to Benifit from it but it sweeps all this garbage and debris from Cuba and South America and dumps it in that natural pocket that forms from Charleston to Southport. Unless your a glutton for punishment take the inside route and enjoy the ride.

Carolina beach, NC has a restaurant/pub call lazy pirate bar. I don't know about BBQ, but the seafood gumbo and the she-crab chowder are award winners. Freshest seafood I ever ate. I watched the fishermen catch flounder (with a spear) just outside of Snow's Cut....

Freebird. Just like Jammin said, you run the Pamlico Sound around to the North into the Albemarle Sound and on into Coinjock. It to me is easier then the right canals past Bell Haven. Also, just like mderlick mentioned the Lazy Pirate is good place to eat. Ate there last summer with my family. The Sea Witch Cafe was good and reasonable also. But the Lazy Pirate might be better this time of year. It’s all indoors where the Sea Witch is more open and has a stage and outside seating. I’ve been to both multiple times and thh Th e food and service were great each time. On another note: a guy contacted me about moving his 52 Bluewater from Pittsburgh PA down the Ohio River to Cincinnati OH because he sold it. Was looking for either a transport Company or a captain. Needs to be moved like yesterday! Would you or anyone you know be interested in the move?Tony

Thanks, Tony. When I charted this route, I just did it with 100 mile intervals on the ICW and didn't look at alternate routes. I'm moving a 53MY from Mobile to Sarasota on 12/03, and unless something changes, this trip will begin on or about 12/12. With that, it's extremely doubtful I can get that one moved before the end of the year unless he wants to make it worth my while to spend Christmas on his boat.

I'll shoot you a PM with my contact info.
