    A fiberglass elbow will be a lot better than the aluminum one you have now.

    Not sure what size your elbow is but for reference Defender sells 2" fiberglass elbows (90) for around $45.
    Fiberglass is forever, anything metal should be bonded.

    The old systems for waterlift mufflers had a lot of metal in the exhaust path. The new ones are all FRP or rubber hose rated for marine exhaust. MUCH better. Far less likely to have problems.

    NL used to have a video called "Don't Drown Me" about genset installations. It's probably on their web site, or you can see it on line. Very helpful with understanding how these systems work if you aren't familiar with them.
