2 stroke, 4 stroke? How does it run at idle and at speed?

4 stroke. Starts quickly, runs well at idle, and all the way through to WOT. When shut down, as the remaining water drips from the exhaust, it creates a slick about 20 feet in diameter.

Re: 40 hp Yamaha oil slick
I can’t how gas would leak in exhaust after shut down. I wonder if some gearcase oil could find its way in the cooling water? Have you checked engine oil level?

Re: 40 hp Yamaha oil slick
It is most likely that the prop shaft seals are leaking. The seals are behind the propeller in the bearing cage. On a Mercury, you need a special tool to get to the bearing cage off to replace the seals. Not sure if it is the same on a Yamaha but likely so. It can be a bugger to get the bearing carrier apart. The right tools and some heat helps!

Okay, I'll find an exploded parts diagram to see what these are and where they live
