I'm at St. Johns Yacht Harbor on the Stono River. It's not downtown, but it's a nice marina and they have a courtesy car. Look me up if you're there Thursday-Sunday. SJ has a nice pool, but it'll be closed Saturday for a special event. If you decide on SJ, pay attention to the current.

BTW, best place for fuel on the trip is Hilton Head Harbor just past the fixed bridge on the ICW. Way cheaper than Charleston, .40-.60/gallon cheaper.

Marinas in Charleston depend on what you're after. City Marina is home to the mega yachts. Ashley Marina is next door, but not as nice. You will definitely need reservations at City. The Hysterical district and restaurants are not walkable but are bike-able if you have them. Otherwise, it's Uber.

Charleston Harbor Resort in Mt. Pleasant is nice. Close to Shem Creek. Same story getting to downtown Charleston.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Robert

I stayed at Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina last month for a couple days and loved it... minor downside is that it's on the other side of the harbor from downtown...but you can take either a water taxi or about $10 Uber to downtown …. the marina and resort amenities are excellent!

    Re: Charleston marinas

I have stayed in Charleston a number of summers and I like Isle of Palms Marina. I also like Toler’s Cove. Beautiful sunsets over the marsh. Both of these are convenient to the small inlets north that have beaches. If you are older or have a dog to walk. I would visit St John’s first as the walk is long where they put the larger boats. To be fair I was there when a bridge was out and you couldn’t access the parking lot at that end. Also the dock wood was rotting and was a structural issue. A severe thunderstorm actually broke of couple finger piers when I was there. The docks and the bridge may be fixed now. I do find it pretty exposed for Hurricane season. Getting a slip in Charleston for the summer can be a challenge. So make plans in advance

Problem with IOP and somewhat with Tolers is shoaling. It’s getting downright dangerous on the ICW around there. Watch the tides. Going to be winter before dredge gets there. Both are some distance from the city and the traffic over there is epic. St Johns’ bridge has been fixed for two or three years. There is dock decay which is why I’m on a rebuilt T head. Marina is under new management and is a pretty good spot. I will correct poster on the walk to large boats. That’s just inaccurate. It is accurate that SJ offers little hurricane protection. No where in Charleston is very safe. Recall the pictures of IOP and Tolers post Hugo. Sunsets? Not too shabby at SJ’s.

Robert makes a very good point about the shoaling up at Isle of Palms. When I was last there high tide was fine for a 5’ draft. I tried to be clear about the walk at St. John’s being long because the bridge was out which made one have to walk all the way to highway bridge to the parking lot. A hell of walk with luggage, groceries, etc. When I was there management made no commitment as to when the bridge would be rebuilt, thus my comment was accurate for the time frame I was referencing.

    Re: Charleston marinas

We are moored on the Mega-Dock at Safe Harbour/City Marina. They wanted to put us 1500’ out at the end of the dock, but I “misheard” the instructions and so we are just down from the office. We plan to leave over the weekend after I do an oil change on the mains: I need to wait at least 36 hours for the engine rooms to cool down. Meanwhile we took the scooter to Bay St for lunch at Magnolia and got back just as it began to rain.
