Installed new starter and battery. Starter engages but solenoid keeps running. Distributor checked both and no defect. I'm thinking it's the voltage regulator or relay. Any ideas?

Re: 8v53 starter issue
There is a disc inside the solenoid that can stick to the two terminals on the back of the solenoid. It usually only does that when you have a low voltage situation and the disc inside arcs and welds itself to the terminals. The first thing to do is get a volt meter and see if you have voltage to the solenoid only when you press the starter button. If the voltage drops when you let off the starter button then take the back off the solenoid and check the terminals. The only other thing it could be is a chewed up ring gear that is not letting the bendix disengage.
