Gruesome.
The devastation challenges my concepts of coastal construction and hurricane hole.
The structures still standing say something for post Andrew Hurricane code building. I've never understood why beach real estate prices never seem to recognize the difference between pre and post Andrew construction. But the video made me think about whether one would prefer to own something left standing in the devastation or just gone. So maybe the pricing has reflected that reality in some way.
The video did not show any boats whose preparation and location saved them. It makes me think my own hurricane prep plans are mere fantasy in the face of a storm of that magnitude.
It's sunny and beautiful again here in Tampa but applying the images of that video to my surroundings makes me question some choices. I should probably watch some wild fire, flood and blizzard videos to calm down. You can pay a lot of state income tax before hitting the break even point from a storm like that and maybe even the fear that it can happen to you and quite suddenly.
Lastly, we should all hope to live among people like the ones in the video who somehow woke up the next day and without time for sorrow, reflection, or pity went to work on the clean up and the future. I hope if faced with the same situation I would match their strength and not be alone but no one really knows if they are that "guy" until faced with the reality seen in the video.
We share this forum for our love of boats and the coastal life which means a lot of members will learn whether or not they are that "guy" someday.
Good luck to Mexico Beach and all of us.

Re: Nobody Talking About Michael?
Hey guys, just checking in. Just got back home last night around midnight. Bob and I moved our boats from Pensacola to Dog River Marina in Mobile Bay as the storm approached. We stayed there until it passed and brought the boats back to Pensacola.
I drove down I-10 shortly after they re-opened it last night on the way home.... it was dark... but near Marianna, fl the devastation is mind boggling. Even there, 60+ miles inland there are not many trees that made it through the storm. There were overturned semi-trucks, whole roofs and pieces of houses laying along side the interstate.
MAJOR props to the team(s) that were responsible for clearing I-10, the sheer amount of trees that had fallen across the interstate were unreal. At times it felt like i was driving through a tunnel with nothing but logs/stumps lining the edges.
Luckily the storm shot straight between my house in south ga and the boat in Pensacola. Not sure how I dodged both of those bullets.... thank god.
Can't even say how many emergency personnel I passed on the road last night. Entire convoys of police cars, ambulances, fire trucks, power and road crews all en-route to the affected areas.
It's hard to express how bad the area is, reminds me of a tornado... just 50miles wide.SOUTHPAWS

Re: Nobody Talking About Michael?
Those of us who live there have been too busy to reply, until now. Our house is in Port St. Joe Beach about
1.5 miles from what is left of the Look Out Lounge. We were able to get into our home, yesterday
as Hwy 71 was cleared. Police security check points were allowing only people who actually lived there passage.
Hundreds of electrical trucks trying to restore power all the way from I10 to the beach.
In Wewa, we watched as 3 white buses with only vents for windows passed by. We later saw 2 buses
returning escorted by cop cars with flashing lights preceding and following them. I know one of the buses went
to Sacred Heart Hospital in PSJ. I was also told that they requested 200 body bags.
All of the businesses are destroyed in Mexico Beach and PSJ as are the marinas (I am told from Panama
City to Carrabelle). My friend with a 70 Foot Hatteras (Big Wave) left and is safe and sound at the Wharf
in Orange Beach.
One of my other friends (a very resourceful guy...see the blog Docs Holiday Coming Home) guided 3 boats
from the PSJ marina up the Apalachicola River and they tied off in the swamp. He told me they did
fine with just a few feet rise in tide and some impressive vibration of the boat in the wind. The only
thing that made them nervous was 2 tornadoes that passed nearby. He is currently tied up
to the concrete dock at the remains of the PSJ marina.
We are meeting with insurance adjusters tomorrow at our home to decide if it is worth rebuilding.
It is a difficult decision since there is such devastation...the sand dunes are gone, the restaurants,
food stores and gas stations are demolished and we know that even though the power
will probably be turned on in 6 weeks, it will be years before the economy comes back. We had
increasing sand dunes over the years behind our waterfront home, so if the storm didn't totally
alter current flows, just maybe over the years the beautiful dunes will rebuild. I am proud to say
that the community is rife with very industrious people, so I have no doubt that they will get it back
in time

Re: Nobody Talking About Michael?
That was a very sobering read. I have stopped following the news on this but know there are still a lot of people missing. The last death toll I heard was in the teens on a total scale of the storm, but I just can't see how it can stay that way. Again, it'll tickle me to be wrong about that.

My 53 conv is at Bay Point. It took a beating but is still floating. It dodged a bullet.
