Cool 53 MY, 53 ED and 56 wide body: Comparisons of Salon width dimensions (port/stbd)

    Hello,

Looking for dimensions on interior space at the beam.....

Would like to compare actual Salon interior beam widths (dimension as measured port/starboard) for the following Hatteras models:

53 Hatteras MY ('69-'88'): Width at Salon useable interior width, (port/stbd not 15'-10 beam)

53 Hatteras ED ('83-'88) Extended Deckhouse: Width at Salon useable interior width (port/stbd not 15'-10 beam)

56 Hatteras wide body ('81-'84) 18'-2 beam: Width at Salon useable interior width (port/stbd not 18'-2 beam)

Trying to get useable space at each of these for comparisons.

    Thanks,

    Mel

53MY and 53ED will be the same, and while I can't say for sure, I would think the 56MY would either be the same or very close given the extra beam is devoted to walk around side decks.

How wide are the side decks on your 53 MY?
I'm surprised the interior Salon width is only 10'-7, I would have figured it to be around 11'-4 or 11'-6.

Do you know how the house outer structural (walls) are built and what the interior framing construction (if any) consists of?

Trying to see what direction I want to move in regarding interior room, this boat will be utilized as a liveaboard, so interior space is key.

    Thank you,

    Mel

I believe the 53ED Salon interior space is considerably wider and longer than the 53MY. There are no wing doors on the 53ED, eliminating the need for side decks and leaving a nice small cockpit area for just sitting out or handling lines. The Salon footprint was then bumped out to occupy the area taken up by the side decks of the 53MY at this location. Unless you can walk a tightrope, there are no side decks at the Salon.

Really would like to know how much wider the 53ED Salon interior is over the 53MY Salon.
    Any ideas?

Thank you very much for your help, I know that sometimes these detailed questions can drive people to drink, and if that's the case here, go ahead and have one on me!

    Thanks again,

    Mel

    Mine is 10'3"

The walls have the external fiberglass with a 3" void and the 1/4" ply veneer inside. There are some 1x3" or so frames.

The EDs must have an extra 18" but i wouldnt trade the side decks for a little more inside, even if living aboard. It s not just the side decks for line handling, it s also the much better ventilation to the aft deck thru the wing doors. It makes a huge difference

Ditto about the wing doors: it’s amazing how much airflow there is when at anchor with the bow to the wind.

Brain fart on the 53MY and wing doors/side decks. Guess I've spent too much time on a 58MY lately. I'd still guess the 56MY and 53ED would be the same or very close in salon width.

So basically, the exterior house walls are fiberglass (structural) cavity walls with 1/4" plywood veneer over wood furring strips. I don't suppose that void came insulated from the factory, did it?

That ventilation point you mentioned with the wing doors
didn't even occur to me, I was too wrapped up in how much width I could get with the 53ED. Ventilation is a necessity on a boat.

Looks like a 56 Widebody if more space needed, as it does have wing doors with the 18'-2 beam. I don't see many for sale.

    Thanks for your help,

    Mel
