Thread: Mask Yea or nay

    Mask Yea or nay

I painted the vertical supports between forward glass, corners to side glass, and between side fixed panel and sliders to update the look a bit. The bright white, to me, was too much contrast between the grey tint on side glass and even the clear glass of the forward panels. Too modern for an old hatt?

I do like the white. Modern look.
When you have windows, show them off. Even if they have heavy tint.
Also, not just another boat with another mask.

No mask is a better look in my humble opinion. Also your fiberglass may not be capable of the extra heat from the black paint.

That’s an interesting thought concerning the laminate overheating. I didn’t specifically rule that out but I had experimented with similar color vinyl wrap on these areas last summer. No obvious effect from sunlight. However it is a real thing, the hull being darker than Hatteras off white shows expansion at the head countertop when the sun is hitting that portion just right The tight seam between the inside wood panel and counter top seam opens about 1/16” . Didn’t do that with a white hull.

The nice thing about a hattie is you can really make it your own. The most important answer to this queston is do YOU love it?

I think it looks great either way. =-)

Assuming you're in New England... I had my sportfish with a total mask on the front in Connecticut and never had an overheat issue... it was DEFINITELY hotter than the white, but not an overall concern.,..

The laminate has been cured for 54 years now, if anything was going to happen it would have already. There is a searay 50'+ motor yacht near me that someone painted the hull black. There are hundreds of vertical cracks in the gelcoat that run from waterline to rub rail.
