Re: Fiberglass hull shaving for weight reduction?

Maybe Rosie O'Donnell could use a shaving? You know as weight savings??

While your at it dimple the entire hull to resemble a golf ball. That should help also.

I've read several threads about shaving the keel. The keel on these can act like a water ski at the higher speeds. Is this what the writer is referring to?

That's completely inappropriate and you should be ashamed.

How rude and unfeeling of you.

Now many of us will have an image if Rosie stuck in our minds eye.

Besides loosing strength I Can't imagine the costs involved in re fairing and refinishing the hull...

There is a lot of weight inside the boat as I ve discovered doing the work on my boat. I took out about 100 lbs of wood blocks and pure resin under the master shower. Removed and cut thru some interior sections that used 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 plywood.

The biggest weight saving will be switching to the C series cummins and ZF gears: 3000 lbs lighter altogether

Pascal, How will the 3000 lbs weight loss affect the stability of your boat? Have you looked into that?

53s have been repowered before with cummins and yanmars. Stability shouldn't be a problem. I've never felt a difference between full tank and low tank, and that's about t h same weight difference.

All good points, however ..... if you're running with 3000 lbs or more of fuel, water etc there sure wouldn't be a difference, but if your water tank is low and fuel is low, now you have 3000 lbs less below the center of gravity.. Actually on a boat that weighs about 60,000 lbs or more it probably won't amount to any adverse reaction but I had to ask. At one time I entertained having a hard enclosure for my bridge including opening windshields and sliding glass windows port and starboard. I was advised not to do it because it may throw off the stability of the boat. Of course the bridge is a much greater distance from the center of balance than the engines.
