    Sentry 32 volt charger problem

    IMG_1431.jpg

My Sentry 32 volt charger seems only to be charging the Port bank and has no output to the Starboard bank. Checked this with a clamp meter. I have tried flipping the manual switch, replaced the fuses, and given it a gentle tap with a hammer. But still no charge to the port bank.

The meter is accurate for the output to the Port bank.

    Any ideas? Repair or replace?

I'd replace it. Get a smart charger and forget those old heavy beasts. I can't imagine not being able to run an equalization on my batteries. Its extends the life by years.

As is commonly known, Outback makes a 32V inverter/charger but, as noted in many previous posts, the OB cannot charge separate banks. It has only once charging output. Obviously, you could purchase/install 2 of them, as some folks have done and have 6KW+ of AC available and the ability to charge the individual banks...

I ended up combining my battery banks so the single OB could charge them but there are several issues to be considered to determine whether that is a good or bad idea depending on the specifics of the boat systems/typical boat operation.

    Newmar.
They don't stock them. They are built to order but are delivered surprisingly quickly.
    Mine works great.
It took me and a helper to remove the Charles monster, I held the Newmar in place with one hand while I installed the bolts with the other.

Why not just buy another Sentry FR3230/3X?

Because they are old technology and the newer smart chargers will pay for themselves in extended battery life.

This would turn the Outback into a two bank charger:

Before you spend your money in a new electronic charger ( which you will not be able to service yourself if something goes bad) take a look inside the sentry charger. on some models, the positive posts have a fuse that may have burned up. Just a suggestion. Good luck.
