Sportfishing boat sinks off of San Diego coast

I dock my yacht next to the sport fishing fleet in San Diego. This past weekend I noticed that the Invicta was not at her normal spot directly across from me. I did a little research and found out she sank after hitting rocks at Coronado Islands just south of San Diego. Be careful out there! All lives were saved but the boat broke in half. She was a beautiful sport fisher.

Bummer about the boat hitting the rocks. With so [relatively] few obstructions off the West Coast, it's pretty amazing that sportfisher found one.

Years ago there was a 42C that went over part of the jetty at Cape May. Boat was stuck on the rocks. Trashed the running gear and lots of Fiberglass damage but the hull wasn't breached. They were running around 20kts when they hit. I'm not saying a Hatteras is tougher than rocks but they can take more than most other brands.

I agree but there Re so many factors including angle it hits, rock shape, etc...

Cape may Jettys have claimed quite a few boats over the years. When approaching from the north there is an optical illusion that makes you think your between the jettys when your actually going to run across the north jetty.
Back in the early 70's Cape island marine was the top Hatt dealer on the east coast. Owner Colt Sommers and two salesmen were delivering 3 new hatts from the factory. 58YF 53c and a 45c. They got to OC MD after dark. Sommers in the 58 ran across the southern jetty that is usually awash and sunk in the middle of the inlet. The 53c got stuck on the top of the jetty. And the 45 was able to stop. The inlet was closed for some time until navy seals blew up the 58. The 53 was pulled of but was destroyed also.
