Does anyone have a recommendation on how to change the transmission oil on the 12-71s? Also what is the best oil to use? I have heard that Delo 100 (engine oil) is ok to use.

12-71 Transmission Oil Change?

Re: 12-71 Transmission Oil Change?
You've probably got Twin Disc MG514C'S ..this applies to them. The manual calls for 500 hour oil changes in normal service. The hold approximately 10 gallons. There is a drain plug on the back that a 3/4 inch drive fits. Most are plumbed to an oil exchanger, or you can draw it out the dip stick tube. It uses the same straight weight 40 as the engines. I most often use the NAPA stuff.

Re: 12-71 Transmission Oil Change?
On my Allison MH transmissions, I remover the dip stick and its guide and sucked the oil out with a 1/4 inch hose and a little drill pump. Replenished with same oil as engine. Same spec as Delo 100.

I change the oil,at 500 hours that ends up about every 2 years or so. I do the filters every year because I don't think its good letting the filter media soak in the oil for more than a year. But really what's the point of changing the oil at all? There are no combustion byproducts getting in the transmissions and any clutch material or metal shavings should end up in the filters. I always pull the bottom plug and get the crap that's settled to the bottom out. That's really what your after anyhow.

We definitely have the Twin Disc MG514C transmissions. I'll look into the filters. Thank for the info guys.

Re: 12-71 Transmission Oil Change?
I’m bringing this old thread back to life because I was reading my Twin Disc MG-514C service manual and it recommends a 6 month or 1000hr interval for oil and filter changes. I am using the same oil as in my engines: NAPA low ash 40wt. Is this still considered good procedure?

6 months doesn't sound right.
Maybe for the first change after breaking it in but not regular use.Scott

Re: 12-71 Transmission Oil Change?
I highly recommend installing an oil change system with a GEAR drive pump, not a rubber impeller. We plumbed our oil change system into the drain plug hole.
