That would seem to be a tad different than the previous account but changes nothing about the tragedy. Wouldn't have thought it would have been a daytime situation, but did they ever come to any conclusions as to what caused the explosion?
Sounds to me like it would have been an engine starting scenario vs starting a generator (not that both can't do the trick) given the fact the boat was at a dock. Gotta love reporters who know nothing about boats as evidenced by blowers being used to clear fuel lines. That being said, I've seen lots of examples where people fail to use their blower before and during running a genset.
That being said, I don't remember ever hearing of a boat explosion caused by a genset. Deaths associated with gasoline genset are usually the result of carbon monoxide poisoning. That too is very avoidable.

Yes, She's a gasoline'r. However, a cool little economical diesel at the right price is certainly a go to. I can always add a small diesel tank to accommodate and update the ignition system as well/ So I'm game!

Re: 4 to 6kw gas genset wanted
I did not know the rest of the family, I don't know what happened to Chuckie.
It was my understanding that the engines could not be started until the blowers ran for an x amount of time, it was wired into the process. I have seen that on quite a few gassers. The genny on this boat however was not so protected and cranked right away when someone hit the switch. Needless to say there must have been a leak and the resulting fumes.
I have had one boat with an Atomic Four gas engine. I treated it like a fused nuclear weapon.1978 53' Motor Yacht "LADY KAY V"

Re: 4 to 6kw gas genset wanted
I've never seen a boat wired where the engines can't be started without running the blowers. Makes no sense. What if you needed to restart in an emergecy and lost the blowers? I would always run the blowers 5 minutes or more on my gassers and did a sniff check as soon as I got on board. If there was a gas smell other than the carb I'd open her hatches and find where it was coming from.

Re: 4 to 6kw gas genset wanted
I'm with Scott as I've never seen (or heard of) a boat where the engines were in any way tied to the blowers. Please understand I'm not trying to make light of anything, and am sorry this tragedy struck so close to home for you. By the same token, how did you/they come to the conclusion that firing up the genset caused that explosion?
Not trying to be picky or whatever, just curios. I've owned lots of gasoline powered boats, several of which had gensets (including my 41 Hatt), and I've never been concerned about onboard explosions. Like Scott said, the old sniff test only takes a second, and I trust my nose over the electronic one that's on the boat. CO monitors are always checked on a regular basis as well, but that too is something that can fail. It then becomes a matter of taking proper precautions to ensure I don't wake up dead having enjoyed sleeping the comfort of AC while running my genset.Randy Register - Kingston, TN

Freebird, I don't recall the exact source of the generator being the culprit, it was a long time ago. But that was what either the CG, cops, friends involved or media concluded at the time.
