Re: Fuel Prime pumps DD 892's

Just sharing my personal experience. I suppose like many things on these boats it depends on how the boats are run, MY vs SF for example, and what other things are on the punch list.

For the type cruising we do and the size of the gen room on the 54 classic MY, carrying a couple of gallons of clean diesel isn't a problem. I always filter the fuel from the carry can before putting it into the filters. I've never had difficulty starting the engines, so the expense of adding priming pumps hasn't seemed worth moving it up to the top of the list. I suppose if I did have a problem, I might wish I had them.

Re: Fuel Prime pumps DD 892's

I have to confess to a "been there, done that" moment. I've run dry a 12v71ti by accidentally putting a fuel manifold lever in the off position and continued stumble starts until dry. I would have loved to have priming pumps. Without one, it took 3 plus gallons of free diesel fuel. I know that because I had one 2.5 gallon container on board.. And it wouldn't quite do it. I was fortunate to be in a safe place when it happened, and docking on one engine was a learning experience. On the 63MY engine room access is a dream, so filling the Racor housings, and the non-spin on canister housing on the block was very simple, but not as simple as a priming pump would have been.. After doing the manual prime thing, electric priming pumps move from the want, to the need list!

Sorry, didn't mean to sound dismissive, and i get not wanting to do a cmplicated install with a walbro, plumbing and valves but Just my opinion, installing one of these racor pumps is a pretty simple upgrade and at 300 bucks a side is relatively cheap.

The Walbros and a few fittings are a hell of a lot less than $300 a side -- even with today's ridiculously-inflated prices.
