    Expensive Batteries?

And we thought Rolls are expensive, but look at the capacity! I think this is the battery that Harris Allen was talking about in Hatt School.

IBEX 2009 Mastervolt's Lithium Ion Battery
Mastervolt's new Lithium Ion Battery is a potential game changer.

Lithium Ion battery technology is widely used in other applications, but has not yet penetrated the marine space when it comes to cranking or house batteries. Mastervolt's entry is the first on the market and, though we have not tested it, it holds a great deal of potential. The battery won an IBEX Innovation Award in the Electrical Systems category.

The 24-volt battery — a 12-volt model is in development — weighs just 115 pounds, with an output comparable to four 8D batteries. Made with lithium iron phosphate, it can be discharged to 80 percent as rapidly and as often as desired without the wear that traditional batteries experience. The company claims a lifespan of 2,000 cycles, which is three times that of normal batteries.

Mastervolt's lithium ion battery produces no gas byproducts, and includes the company's battery management system, which balances cells to provide full voltage, current and temperature control. It can be connected in parallel without limitation and in series up to 250-volt DC, according to Mastervolt.

One drawback is the cost: at more than $7,500, it is expensive. But company officials say that the battery will outlast three sets of 8D batteries, which would mitigate the costs over a period of years. They also expect it to come down in price.

At that price I would have to live to 150 years old to break even!!!

    "One drawback is the cost:"

Dang! That's the same drawback that keeps me from buying a Ferrari 458 Italia. I hate it when that happens!

Don't Lithium-Ion batteries go BOOM! in water?

Lithium PHOSPHATE batteries should be safer.

However at $7,500 I think I'll buy the regular sort of battery.....

Wow! Didn't know that and didn't follow that thread as I don't need 32V batteries. Forget cost being a drawback, I have no desire to carry bombs on board.

Yeah... It's so good they guarantee it for 2 years!!

    Re: Expensive Batteries?

Apparently some boat builders think they're okay. Think of the company liability if they explode.

Electric Propulsion at Pearson Composites, LLC
Pearson Composites installs the first U.S. installation of the new electric propulsion line of products.

Pearson will install a 7.5kW electric drive system onto its new Alerion 33 sailboat. The fully electric propulsion system will also seamlessly integrate with Mastervolt’s charging system, award winning Lithium Ion battery and MasterBus™ CANbus network.

    Electric launch from Frauscher

Their latest model, the 6.5m (21ft) Frauscher 650 Alassio, is fully electrically propelled, with power coming from Mastervolt’s MLI24/160 Lithium-Ion battery. As Lithium weighs less than water, these revolutionary batteries can provide 4.3kWh for just 48kg each, which not only saves a huge amount of weight, but also takes up less room. They can also be repeatedly deep discharged by up to 80% over 2000 cycles without harm, making them perfect for electrical propulsion.

Lithium Ion chosen for Blue Water Cruising
After a visit to the London Boat Show in 2009, the owner of a 23m (70ft) Oyster yacht in build in the UK decided to strip out a brand new bank of lead acid batteries and fit Lithium-Ion instead.

The owner realised that he could save over a ton of unnecessary weight by switching to Lithium-Ion, and would also have a bank he could cycle much more deeply,’ explained David Payne of Mastervolt UK. ‘After seeing the new batteries on our stand, and researching their capabilities, he was happy to instruct the builders to reconfigure the battery compartment to accept six 24-volt Lithium-Ion batteries.’

Hmmmm......I think I'll buy 10 of those and make a nice inverter bank.

On second thought, maybe I should just buy $75,000 worth of diesel fuel instead and run my generator non-stop for the next 20 years.

think of the carbon tax liability .
