    Engine Oil - Napa=Valvoline

About to buy 5, 5 gallon pails of oil for my oil change. Based on comments here, I will stay away from Rotella T 40 weight and go with either Valvoline All Fleet Plus (70501) or Napa 75118 which I am told is the identical oil. Only problem is that the Napa website lists the API for their part number 75118 as SJ and not CF-2. Valvoline says it's a mistake. Are these the same oil?

Also, I have a chance to buy the following oil with the following specs at a very good price ($35 per 5 gallon pail). Is it suitable for my Detroits?

The specs for the Miles product looks good, but the price is almost too good to be true. I know some off-brand oils are actually recycled or partially recycled oil. You might want to check on that.

Sky - thanks. I will check into that. I also wonder whether all of the discussion about differences in sulfated ash content really matter that much for me since I end up putting well under 100 hours per year on both boats. Rotella T is readily available at a decent price but the specs for the Miles Oil look even better as is the price. Once again--for those in the know--like Sky--please confirm that the specs of the Miles Oil are acceptable for my two cycle Detroits. The last thing I want to do is put the wrong oil in the engines.

Why are you staying away from Rotella?

    Re: Engine Oil - Napa=Valvoline

Rotell just makes the spec. It has the highest level of sulfated ash allowed for the detroit spec. there are better oils for less.

You guys need to make up your minds. Based on everything I remember reading, the only no-no where Rotella is concerned is going with 15-40.

I do recall somebody recommended the NAPA oil a while back, but the local NAPA dealers here don't carry the straight 40, but they did have it in Rotella. The NAPA oil wasn't represented as better, but it was just a tad bit cheaper.

    Re: Engine Oil - Napa=Valvoline

Just ask them to order the NAPA. Most of us here do that.

The napa has a lower ash content

Not a problem but the Napa website says it has an API of "SJ". Not sure what that is but I thought it was supposed to be CF-2.

The Exxon XD3 40wt has a sulfated ash content of 0.8%
Shell Rotella has 1% sulfated ash.
Texaco Ursa Extra Duty 40 weight Ash content is .76%.

Took your suggestion and just ordered 5, 5 gallon pails of the Napa 75118 for $40 per pail.
