Hi All. Wanted to know if anyone knows what kind of fluid should be used in my 1985 32 ft Hatteras with 3208T 300hp Twin Disc MG 506 1.5-1 Marine transmission. Transmission oil ?? And how often should it be changed??
Boat is in Marina Del Rey California so it doesnt get to cold!!
One more thing I forgot is the proper way to check level similar to a car ( Running in neutral)???

Re: Transmission Fluid type ??
Those transmissions use SAE-API service class CD engine oil. Either SAE30 or SAE40 oil depending on temperature range.
Steady state temps:
Between 150°-185° F use SAE30
Between 175°-210° F use SAE40
If your gear oil coolers are seawater cooled you'll probably need the 30 and if they're cooled by the freshwater circuit the SAE40.--- The poster formerly known as Scrod ---

40# motor oil. Change every 300 to 500 hr.

I have been using Cat TDTO (Transmission/Drive Train Oil) SAE 30 with good results in my TD 506. Supposed to provide longer clutch life.
You should check the oil level with the engine at idle speed and the transmission in neutral.
