  2. Are diesel gensets not ignition protected?

Why? I am (was) considering changing out the gas genny for a diesel unit in our gas powered Sedan. Whats different? Can one get or make a diesel powered generator ignition protected?

  3. Change the coolant once a year???

Seems I picked this up on an earlier thread. While I have never considered this ("once a year"), it may be good advice. Was wondering what other (panelist) think about peroiodic coolant flush and renewal. (I want to get the most out of my CATs). (Responses please stick to the #$&* thread - dang...

  4. bad oil leak

I got go run the boat finally after all the exhaust work today. But unofortunetly I now have a new problem. We have some sort of major oil leak on the front side of the starboard engine. It leaked somwhere between a quart and two quarts in a short 20 minute ride. Every thing was running good...

  5. Oven venting

We're going through a complete galley renovation including replacement of the original appliances. Above the old oven is an empty cavity that appears to vent to the outside at the forward end of the galley window. However, there is no vent pipe in this space. I'm installing a GE Advantium...

  6. Fuel Tanks

In the restoration of my 34SC I am approaching the point of repowering to diesel. With all the horror stories about fiberglass fuel tanks and ethanol blends, I am leary of moving forward without replacing the fuel tanks. 1) Once FG tanks are flushed and cleaned does that stop the damage from the...

  7. MMO - use on Bike but related to boat!

Another "Marvel-ous" save for Marvel Mystery Oil. I've been using this stuff for years and it never ceases to amaze me... I have a new old Norton Commando Motorcycle that I just acquired. As is normal with everything you buy - boats, cars, bikes, whatever - things are often not as they are...

  9. Robertson Autopilot Repairs/Parts

I've got an AP 300 series unit, with the main display freaking out. For some time it gave frequent control unit failures, and the LCD display would go nuts. I don't think it's the brain box however because the remote always seemed to work. Every pic I've seen of these shows dark spots in the LCD...

  10. NMEA Translation-Old Auto Pilot

Has anyone tried to translate NMEA 180 to 183 or vise versa? I have a good Robertson AP (NMEA 180) that will not take course deviation corrections from my cheapy GPS (NMEA 183 output). Is there a way to do this cheaply? This Robertson holds a heading great but will not track to way points, etc....

  11. rudder alignment

Don's thread on prop offset got me thinking about running gear. If I remember right, the rudders on my 36C are towed in about 5 -10 degrees (will measure next time she is out). How much tow in should be there? Boat turns well in both directions. Thanks, Bob K

  12. so why would/did you get an older hatteras?

So, just for fun, why did you or why would you (if buying another boat) buy an older hatteras? Why buy a 50'-60' boat that is essentially 30 years old vs. say a motoryacht (if that is your style boat) that is only say 3 years old and admittedly maybe 5-7 feet shorter but still, basically a brand...

  14. Hull Number

I just aquired a 34 Sport Cruiser. Led to believe it to be 1965. Engraved in the main beam is hull # C34 413. What year did they build #413? Hatt customer service says I have a Convertable. But no flush fore deck, I have the raised cabin. trying to learn of the vessels history while I try my best...

  15. SC34 Props offset

About to repower and wonder if anyone can give a reason why one prop is inches forward of the other. Is it that shafts are just made different lengths. Rudders are square and struts are as well.

  16. Remote Block Heater Thermostat/ON/Off

Looking for ideas here. On the 56, I use a Chromalox thermostat in each engine room to turn on/off my block heaters with a remote switch in the pilothouse to manually overide the thermostats or to have the circuit run through the thermostats with a red led light to let me know when the block...

  17. VacuFlush not "vaccuming" ...

The saddest sound...is NOT hearing "whooooooosh" when ya step on the flusher handle. The v-berth head, drains slowly, but doesn't "suck it up (down?)" - as the case may be. B4 I go digging out the manual, (and please, gods, let that be the *only* thing I need to go digging out) I figured I'd...

  18. Hour Meter Plastic Blank

I will be moving my hour meters from the engine room panel to the helm. I have asked Steve at Sam's and they do not carry the pastic blanks to fill up the hole left by the removed hour meters. Does anyone know of a source for these as I have been unable to find any? Thanks

  19. I want to build a watermaker

I want to build my own watermaker. Has anyone done this themselves? I have a place where I can locate it, provided it's not noisy - would be in the master stateroom in the void area under the dresser drawers where the big exhaust tube is (mascerator pump is located here on the other side). ...
