  1. A "Hatteras" tug boat (few were built)

Don't know if this made it in the Forum before I came along. I think Hatteras made an attempt at building a few tug boats. Locals claim they were very worthy vessels: (Be as it may, DON'T TRY THIS WITH YOUR BOAT) http://koti.mbnet.fi/~soldier/towboat.htm (The Molly Brown) Capt'n Bill :o

  2. Smile Goof Off and hull marks?

Re: thread of guy with dock wheel marks. Didn't know Goof Off can be used to remove hull marks. Would like to hear more from anyone with experience. Thanks, Capt'n Bill

  3. Zincs

I'm getting only about 5 mounths out of a set of zincs (1988 40' DC). I think I should be getting better than this. We relocated the boat to a temporary location in S.C. recently, and the problem persisted, so apparantly this is not a marina problem. A couple of years ago when I became concerned I...

  4. Fresh Water Pump - What I need?

Re: 40' DCMY. Bought el cheapo 12V pump for ship's general fresh water system last year. The local WM only had a weak unit that served to only get me by. Now I want something that will deliver decent pressure - at least 40 PSI (or better) and can service two heads, galley, wash down, etc....

  5. Change the coolant once a year???

Seems I picked this up on an earlier thread. While I have never considered this ("once a year"), it may be good advice. Was wondering what other (panelist) think about peroiodic coolant flush and renewal. (I want to get the most out of my CATs). (Responses please stick to the #$&* thread - dang...

  6. Goodby Mr. Plumber!

I just wanted to share something I accomplished with a new plumbing product called "SharkBite" by Cash Acme in Alabama (http://www.cashacme.com/). Just this week I finished installing a hot water circulator at home. During a recent trip to Home Depot to buy the fittings to do the project a...

  7. Raw water pumps, pulley rust

As a preacaution I am having my raw water engine pumps rebuilt to include impellors, seals and ball bearings (Jabsco 7420-1001). Originally I had ordered new impellors and seals. Then when a friend with the same series Hatteras and pumps as mine had a bearing seize I also ordered these as well...

  8. Question Depth Sounder

I need to install a new sounder on my 1988 40' double cabin. I intend to use the sleepy old system as back up (works fine but sometimes goes away to think about things before coming back). I think a low end graphic fish finder should work fine, nothing fancey. Question is: does "shoot through" hull...

  9. Vent Screen Removal

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this but I have three of these small DC exhaust fans on the boat with what appears to be a 4" diameter cover screen. Problem is the screens are slowly clogging up and seem to be installed rather tight. I'm afraid that if I try too hard to remove them I might risk...

  10. Charger/Inverter and AGM batteries

Here's the plan: Replace Gp 8 lead acid (floaded cell) batteries with (4) Gp 31 AGMs. Replace older charger with charger/inverter with 3-setting (led acid, gel, AGM) chargeing capability and 2500 watt output. Or, replace older charger with (separate new) charger and inverter. The needs: ...

  11. Installing an inverter/charger

I plan to install a 2000 amp inverter/charger in my 40' DC. I am under the impression that I will be able to easily service one side of the AC bank of circuits with the inverter (thats all I would need - particularly the ice maker side). Does anybodey see a problem with this application or have any...

  12. Prescious Metals

Just recently a guy at WM said that muratic acid will disolve the residual zinc remains that are found clinging inside "pencil zinc" brass plugs (the inside and outside threaded type). Has anybody done this - without harm to the brass - and if so would you dilute the acid? (I'd prefer to do...

  13. What is this???

These items have been in my parts bin on the boat for about five years now. I generally hold on to things for fear that they may be replacement parts for something important that may need repairing. However I cannot think of a thing for which they apply to. (The smaller 3 nuts are identical though...

  14. Unhappy SS Zinc Eater...still an issue!

Well, after Karl was kind enough to write out an elaborate step by step plan for isolating the cause of (Nobody You Know)'s excessive (IMHO) bi-annual consumption of zincs I, along with the help of a good friend and captain, went to work. Upon completion of step one in the “Check for DC leakage...

  15. Red face Air Horns

Seems that everytime I go to take the boat out I have to re-adjust the air horns (unlawful to cruise without proper sounding device). They adjust by loosening the collar nut on the "funnel" and then screwing the funnel in or out (while wife is pressing switch). I don't know if changes in...

  16. How do I make it go away?

After digesting many good pointers on going about changing out the coolant in my engines I'm haveing a really tough problem trying to find out what is the best way to properly dispose of old engine coolant. (I thought this was mentioned in the past and did a "search" on old Threads). I have made...

  17. Bilge Floor Repair

A couple of weeks ago I removed an OEM battery box which was bonded to the flat section in the bilge floor between the engines (the box was old and starting to break up). To tear it out it ripped up a section I wouldn't call gel coat but was a section of coating over the original floor matting (see...

  18. Question Plastic stuff on bridge dash

My 40' 1988 DC utilizes an inexpensive black plastic material commonly used for indoor signs and engraving to serve as removable backing plates for which all instruments, switches and guages are mounted. Not surprisingly this material is getting brittle and starting to break up. Mike at Sam's said...

  19. A "Sticky" Subject

In a recent thread a member made mention of bonding vinyl to acrylic panels utilizing hot glue. Hot glue is something that I have seen but know absolutely nothing about. I always thought that glue like adhesives is not very permanent. But apparantly there is more to what can be accomplished with...

  20. Cadet Heat Registers

My '88 DC has 2 Cadet Heat (wall) Registers. From all appearances these seem to be OEM. They are not working. Only once about a year ago one came on and was shut off. Never could get it to work again. While the other (2) ships HVAC systems have satisfied our winter and summer needs it's time to...
