  1. 45 Hatteras vs 42 Bertram

I am seriously considering and comparing a 45 Hat (1986) and a 42 Bertram (1987) which are both equipped with DD6V92's w/ similar hours on rebuilds. My application is South Florida fishing (troll, kite), occassional dock condo and occassional weekend Bahamas fishing trip. Are there any ride...

  4. Hatteras stress test

The web picture below is actually used in a stress test. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but this is amazingly accurate. The attached photo has 2 almost identical dolphins in it. It was used in a case study on stress level at St. Mary's Hospital. Look at both dolphins jumping out of the water....

  6. 53 exhaust collector back...

I got my exhaust collector back from Marine Manifolds here on Long Island. He did an excellent job cleaning up the entire unit and repairing the corroded portion. It looks new. I had it back in a bit over a week. He was recommended to me on this site and I just wanted to pass on another...

  7. Air Box Drains & Check Valves for DD

As I understand it. DD's equipped with air box drain tube check valves, the valves will close at high rpm and open at idle. My question is what happens to the "gook" that settles at the bottom of the air box while underway for an extended period of time like 8 to 10 hrs? George 1975 53MY

  8. Looking at a older 53 Classic.......

The vessel seems to be in nice shape but I'm a bit uncomfortable with the size of the fuel tanks (only 550 gals). My current vessel has larger fuel storage and a lower burn at cruising speed. Assuming a 15% fuel reserve and a mid thirties gal/hour burn this boat only has legs for a 13 hour...

  9. Anti-sieze

So when I pulled a heat exchanger to have it boiled out (8V71TI's), there were 3 bolts that were totally frozen and their heads broke off when removing them. The good bolts looked rusted to me. I bought all new bolts (correct hardness from DD) and when I reinstalled them, I used automotive...

  10. Muffler Age

I was wondering what the typical muffler would last in a 454 gas application. I can only guess that I have the original muffler...which would make it close to 20yrs old. I haven't seen any leaks although there is some rust that hasn't gotten worse since I owned the boat. I'm thinking the...

  12. niads

Have a set on 1972 53' MY, been in place since 76, still working great. Only maintenance is regular oil changes on the control system, the directional control valves at each fin/head are very sensitive to contaminated fluids. Makes a big difference in ride comfort, esp in the Pacific due to...

  13. Doncha' just love it?

When you find the little "uh-oh's" that you don't expect? This is another in the series, "Don't let anyone else touch your stuff." Today I was inspecting the blower on the port engine's 8V71ti. Everything was fine - nice and clean, no excessive play - so I put a new gasket in and put the...

  17. Holding tank/extra fuel conversion

Considering converting the 165 gal holding tank to fuel on our '83 46C. Anyone know of any potential downsides to this? Would probably just use this tank to transfer fuel to the main. How should I clean/prep the tank for diesel?

  18. Barnacles and a bonehead almost sank my boat.

I heard water dripping/splashing while in the engine room last weekend. Water was blowing out the top of the engine room sea chest. The A/C discharge and bilge pumps dump into this sea chest. Some knucklehead had screwed a wire clamp to the top of it making a nice hole. The pressure inside the...
