  1. Windlass Wiring

Around a year ago I replaced the windlass on the boat with a Maxwell 2200. My concern is the connection of the wiring to the battery. The previous windlass had the positive connection to the battery switch, but I was told that that was not the correct way to wire it, that the connection had...

  8. Coolers for 1271TI's

I purchased my 1980 53 Convertible with 1271TI's in 2000. In 2001 a Detroit mechanic found the coolers to have a few missing bolts, corroded bolts and leaking gaskets. At that time the coolers were dismantled, new bolts installed, rodded out coolers, and reassembled. The boat has been relocated,...

  10. Weeping canvas....

Okay so I've just installed new black Sunbrella all over the boat (bimini, aft deck, hand rails, pulpit) and some of it is weeping extensively down onto the hull. What's the deal? Thought Sunbrella was the good stuff. How do I treat it?

  11. Galley Maid Vertical Windlass-Dead Motor

I have a Galley Maid vertical windlass off a 24v system. It continues to blow the breaker when I activate either button. I pulled off the motor to make sure it moves freely, and it does. Local motor shop said that just about everything is worn, and it is not worth repairing. Galley maid wants...

  12. Injectors

I ran across a listing for a 58' YF with an interesting note, it reads as follows: "Powered by 8V71TI Detroit Diesel engines. Less then 200 hours SMOH. The engines currently have 55mm injectors which give the vessel a 10-12 knot cruise and a full speed of 15 knots, with 90mm injectors you can...

  13. fuel consumption

I am still really happy with my new purchase, a 1980 37c with 671 n's. I have noticed the starboard fuel tank sure empties faster than the port side. In about 3 hours of cruising @2050 rpm about 1/8 extra was gone from the strb side tank (2 tanks 165 gallons each). Is this normal? Thanks

  15. Hull Moisture

When I had my 43' Motoryacht surveyed 5 years ago, my surveyor said the hull was one of the driest he'd ever seen. Last week, a potential buyer had the hull surveyed and the surveyor said there was appreciable moisture around the bow. What is the significance of moisture in a fibreglas hull,...

  16. Paint touch-ups

I just bought a 1980 37c with 671-n's and over all I am very happy with it so far. There are however a few small spots on the top side where the paint has been chipped or rubbed off, and I sure the paint is original. Is there any way to touch up these spots without making a bigger mess? Any info...

  17. For those with 871’s

“N’s” preferably. When you next run your engines, at idle, would you please take IR temp readings on your exhaust manifolds, 1 inch from the head and post the readings? This is for comparison purposes to mine. On mine I read: Port eng, Left Bank- 177-184F Port eng, Right Bank- 177-180F...

  19. Head questions - 53MY

Our boat has the 3 original Galley-Maid heads and, it appears, the original controls. After the toilets flush, water continues into the bowl for several seconds and...
