  1. Insurance renewal

I have seen previous discussion here about insurance premium increases. I just got the (BoatUS) renewal for my 1970 Matthews 46 MY and it is up by 60%. It is for cruising Chesapeake Bay and tributaries only. Please refresh my geezer memory, Who have you guys gone to for a better price, with good...

  4. Rotted deck under windlass

Well I finally started to repair the deck area under the windlass this week. I noticed water dripping from the bolts when it rained. Removed the galley maid and pupit and cut a 12" square hole above the windlass. It took me 2 days to get this far. Each bolt took about 20 to 30 minutes to remove....

  5. Original Dual station A/C water temp gauge

anybody have a pair of the original hatt AC dual station water temp gauges and sending unit? The previous owner replaced the starboard AC water temp gauges with a pair of SW gauges. I can't handle the mismatch with the rest of the upper/lower helm gauges. SAMS doesn't have the original AC gauges...

  6. M20 transmission pressure

I was reading the M20 transmission manual today and noted that the pressure called for in the manual is somewhat less than that indicated on my two M20s. Both of them warmed up and at 1500 RPM in forward show around 164 PSI using direct-reading gauges in the engine room. The tranny specs call for...

  7. AC Oil Pressure Sending Unit

One of my AC oil pressure sending units needs to be replaced ... from previous threads I'm assuming that only an AC sending unit will work with the AC gauges ... if this is correct, does anyone have an old sending unit that you're no longer using ... and if it's not correct, will any sending unit...

  8. "In-Frame" Overhaul question...

Not that I have any need to worry about this at the moment but I'm curious. I see the term in-frame overhaul used quite a bit and although I completely understand the concept, and have performed them on numerous land vehicles of various types, I don't see how it's possible on a boat - or at least...

  9. 53MY steering ram size?

Anyone know offhand the cubic inch capacity of the hydraulic steering ram on the 53MY? We have decided to put in a new autopilot over the winter and I'm trying to determine what size hydraulic pump we will need. I have reviewed past messages here and done additional research. I haven't yet...

  10. Adjusting a VDO Vanguard series tach.

Does anyone know how to adjust a VDO tach? There are no set screws on the back, only 8 slide switches? I don't have any papers on the gauges and can't seem to locate anything on the web. My Cummins mech. checked the engines and confirmed that I have one gauge that is slightly off. On other...

  11. Angry Bypassing Water Heater

On my 1983 32' FBSF the water heater has finally given out. In attempting to by-passthe heater for winterizing, I've come against a problem not sure how to solve. Have removed the compression fitting to the hot water outflow from the heater, attached a vynl hose and blew -50 antifreeze thru the...

  12. Heads up West Coast (again!)

Wilma is gonna come knocking, me thinks........ Been watching this thing for a week, and today it finally got the NHC's attention. Some projections on computer models I've seen are VERY bad for intensity (think "Katrina") Its not quite time to panic yet, but the climatology this time...

  13. Holding tank for a 45C series 1

I have a 1970 45 (45C-360). I need to install a holding tank. In some of the later years of the 45C, there was a holding tank built in (not sure of location), mine does not have that. Questions: Where have folks installed holding tanks on these earlier 45Cs? (size & location) How good are...

  15. Hey Pascal, another hurricane

Well I fly out Thursday to L.A. and the wife is "not overly happy" that I am leaving her on the boat with a Cat 5 hurricane that is schedule to hit Florida while I'm gone. But we now live in N. Florida and the "experts" say we have nothing to worry about.... UGH. And as the forecast is for her...

  17. Swim Platform finish?

So I just spent 4 hours sanding all the old bad finish off of my swim platform. My question is: what finish, if any, should I put on it? I lean towards just putting tung oil on it once a year and letting it get that weathered teak look. The swim platform wood looks to be in excellent condition...

  18. Haul out or leave in?

I had planned to leave our 53MY in the water this winter and do a short haul next May to perform several out-of-water chores. But now I'm thinking about hauling it for the winter. I have never done this before, preferring to leave boats in the water but I would like to hear opinions about this...
