  1. 671 T smoking badly-grey blue smoke

Guys, My '76 starboard 671 Turbo (4 Valve) is getting worse. We had a raw water impeller fail two weeks ago (185-190 degrees before shutdown) and misdiagnosed as a thermostat. Replaced that, retested and with new IR thermometer quickly found raw water impeller housing overheated. Engine got to...

  2. 671 TA smoke

Just surveyed a 49 Gulfstar with 671 TA engines that started from cold immediately with very little smoke for about 5 seconds. As soon as we started running up the RPM’s they started smoking very black smoke at about 1500 and it did not clear up at all. Supposedly all 4 turbos were just serviced,...

  3. 671 thermestats

I have a pair of detroit 671s in my 1973 38 dcmy. They run at a temperature lower than 180 degrees, somewhere around 140. The previous owner bought two new thermostats but never installed them. He seemed to think that they don't have thermostats in them currently and that's why they run so cool. If...

  4. 671 ti engine life

Been reading on different forums about the 671 485hp engines and what the service life should be. Wanted to see what people have been getting out of these engines. Thanks

  5. 671 TIB RPM problem

I have a 1988 38 ft. conv. with 671's rated for 485 HP. During a survey there was one bad injector on each engine so prior owner had all injectors replaced. It originally had M110 injectors and they were replaced with 7255's per Detroit. The boat used to be able to get 2400 RPM WOT with the old...

  7. 671N fuel leak

Good Afternoon My J&T 671N has a fuel leak . I thought it was around the secondary filter (canister type) or the fuel fitting at the cyl head or maybe the little fuel pump. After replacing the filter and cleaning the area. I ran the engine what appears to be happening is the...

  12. 671na fuel filter change

Planning on fuel filter changes this spring. Two canister filters per motor. No racor separators (yet). My previous experience has been strictly spin on filters so this will be a first with canisters. Any advice/experiences would be greatly appreciated.

  13. 671TI 450hp JT Correct Injectors?

Does anyone know the correct injector for the JT 450HP 671TI? JT originally put M95s in them, but they are no longer available. I would appreciate any knowledge as to what anyone with the same engine is running. I would also be interested in the injector height setting. Thanks John D.

  15. 671TI cold start

Mike P, Here is a cold start on a pair of 450HP 671TI's that have not been started in 5 weeks. Temp of the engines with a IR gun was 70 degrees. The stbd battery was low and I had to parallel it hence the delay.

  16. 671ti grey smoke - How much of a mechanic do I need

The last 2 boat rides I noticed white/grey somoke coming from the stbd engine exhaust at idle after running. Nothing noticable at speed only idle. Also on the most recent trip I smelled diesel. The port exhaust is clear. The engines are Covington 671ti's, 390 hp, 2600 hrs or so. No problem...

  17. 671TI Hour meter wire???

1979 37C w/ 671TI covingtons. Both hour meters stopped working 6 months apart. Meters and oil pressure switches are fine. I just finished complete cooling system service, hose replacement and commissioning of the 671TI's in our 37.
