  1. Cooling system/Intercooler cleaning

If there's a world-wide shortage of silicone, it's because the previous "mechanic" on Brigadoon bought it all and used it on the engines... I pulled the port intercoolers (8v71TI) yesterday. Pulling them was pretty easy as one unit, just four bolts and the hoses to the water/turbos/air horn. ...

Had the allied fire safty guy inspect my 19 year old haylon system and it checked out to be right on the money weight wise. pulled the bottle and looks to be in pristine condition, no rust anywhere. My question is that the inspector says it has to be inspected yearly. I thought I saw a post saying...

  4. Underwater Grounding/Bonding

The boat's in the barn so I got a long wire and toned out all of the metal parts that are underwater compared to the bonding straps inside the boat. I got a beep on every piece of metal except the bronze engine raw water intake clamshell scoops. The bronze intake pipe, just inside the scoop did...

  6. Red face Search for propeller

Ooops! Coming back from a beautiful weekend Sunday afternoon. Going thru a channel that I had used probably 20 times before. THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. Power to idle and trans to neutral, stirred up mud/coral in the wake. We checked for water coming in, there wasn't any, but a terrible vibration on...

  8. 6-71 Raw Water Impellers

I wanted to change raw water impellers today and ran into a snag. I bought the boat 2 years ago with newly installed impellers plus spare Jabsco impellers in the "bilge box". The new Jabsco impeller looked different than what was on the engine. Same diameter and width, but fewer and thicker...

  9. Am I nuts II

Bought the VRO packing for the 37C with 3/4" shafts, 3/8" just like my manual says. No way it will fit in the compression nut. I measure 3/16" from the shaft to the top of the thread. I suppose someone could have changed the stuffing box in the last 30 years. Am I missing something. Hal P.S. Just...

  10. 48 Cockpit MY - Series II

I have become interested in a 48 Cockpit MY - the later 90's vintage. Was wondering if anyone on the Forum could give me some opinions, comments or prevailing problems with that model. The negatives I have noticed thus far are very deep (5'+draft) for a 48' boat and It's a bit tall and boxy in...

  11. Bow thrusters

Planning to haul my new (1977) 58 Yachtfish in May for bottom painting. The spouse wants a bow thruster so I'm soliciting input on this project. Any comments on brands, size, hydraulic v. electric, specifics on location, problems encountered in installation, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

  12. Allison MH 20L Grease

I had one of my trannys rebuilt at the end of last year. On my Spring shakedown all worked fine but I found a fairly large clump of what appeared to be a reddish grease beneath the hole in my coupling (the hole used to get the cotter pin out). It is clearly grease and not oil from the tranny. This...

  13. 45C any ideas on a bait well?????????

The 45C is a great model for fishing but where is the bait well. Would love to hear suggestions. I have tried the cooler looking for something more stationary. Has anyone converted the cockpit storage area? Has anyone plumbed this area? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  15. Cutlass Bearings

I was recently quoted around $4,200 to pull and replace all six of the cutlass bearings on a 58'MY. Never before having replaced six bearings, I am wondering if this quote is reasonable or whether I should look elsewhere. Location is Miami. Thanks, Ang

  16. Leak in Fresh Water Line

During commissioning the fresh water system on our newly purchased 48' 1983 Motoryacht it appears that there is a leak in the supply line between the fresh water tank (located under the aft cabin berth) and the fresh water pump in the engine room. Access and visibility to the incoming line from the...

The two panals in our cockpit at the corners, where the cleats are at are both broken and The Admiral has stated I need to replace them... (The results of "non boating people" who put dock lines on the cleat and not thru the support ring). As they are curved, wondering where I can get them....

  20. 36 c

I am in the process of purchasing a 36 c. I have had the oil anaylsis returned and the starboard engine showed an elevated lead level of 17 ppm. The port engine was 6 ppm. The engines are cat 3208n. The lab wants to resample by 125 hrs. I am a bit concerned, should I be?
