Anyone use pro-spec oil ? mechanic doing some work on my 871s says its a must. There is info on his website one.infielddiesel.com (http://one.infielddiesel.com)

Never heard of it but this is America! There is always room for another oil claiming to be better than all other oils. :hat

The oil specs on his website read the same as 40Wt (Shell) Rotella specs so it's no better than Rotella (or any other name-brand oil that meets the same specs). It appears he is a distributer for the oil which, if I was a cynical person, might lead me to believe that it's a "must" in order for him to make more money. But that's only if I was a cynical person. ;)

Detroit Diesel doesn't say it's a must! I always use DD oil in my 8V71TI's, but the same thing can be bought for a little less than the DD brand, which is the same as the Mobil brand. The 2 cycle DDs are funny about oil. See recent threads and the Sam's Marine website article about new formulation oils being bad for 2 cycle DDs.

Ok, now I'm confused... For DD 2 cycles, I thought designation of CD (obsolete) CH-2 or CF were all acceptable. Can't find or Rotella ot DD oil locally. Tried NAPA, Acme Auto & Advance Autocare. Can someone set the record straight as to what designation we should use?

The DD service manual states that API CF2 40wt oil is correct for the 2 stroke engines.

Go to the DD website they have a 32 page doc. that covers fuels and oils, for both 2 (pages 3&4) and 4 cycle diesels. I use Delo 100 - 40wt in an 8v71, exactly because they have made recent (2002) formulation changes to their 400 series oils to accommodate the newer 4 cycle diesels. There is an advisory bulletin from Delo on their website that cover the changes and makes the Delo 100 recommendation for 2 cycles DD. NEVER EVER...use multi-viscosity oil in a DD 2 cycle. Like the others on this thread - I stay away from ANY off brand oil, no matter what great mechanic recommends something else. I have a little over 4000 hrs on my 8v71n's - no oil burn or cold start smoking problems...none. I change the oil and filters once a season or every 100 to 200 hrs depending on how hard I have been running them. The more idling, the more frequent the changes. Mike

I'll keep looking for Delo 100 or Rotella 40wt, but in a pinch I assume any major brand CF-2 is acceptable.

40wt straight grade. NO multi-vis oils - ever.
Sulfated ash UNDER 1.0%. The lower the better.
CF-2 or higher (must have the "-2" suffix)

Those are the biggies.

when you say "CF-2 or higher" are you saying CF-2 or CF-4 is acceptable?

Can you find Chevron "Delo 100" in a straight 40 wt. locally? It's the right stuff according to Detroit Diesel. Where are you located?

"CF-2 or higher" means that if you found a "CG-2" oil, it is acceptable (higher letter)

CF-4 oils are NOT acceptable.

I can get both the Delo 100 and Exxon XHD around here; I prefer the XHD these days because I can't get the Delo in anything other than one gallon jugs, but can get the XHD in 5 gallon pails.

In one of the very FEW times the little man wins, I went to West Marine a few months ago as they had Delco 100 40 wt oil on sale for $7.49 a gal.
I picked up 2 gals and when the cashier checked me out, it totaled $4.49 a gal. I checked the ad I had with me.... (It STILL said $7.49 a gal)......
I asked him if that was the correct price he charged me and said yes, I asked how many more gals they had.
He checked and said 33 more, I bought all of it. I smiled a LOT as I drove away and realized that for ONE I was on the winning side.
No telling me how many times I've walked out after being overcharged so I have a clear conscience

Thanks for the replies. Seems like I have a couple of choices. Not to get off the subject, but. This mechanic is completing his work tomorrow, new injectors, over haul of inter-cooler and some other minor work. I will sea trial tomorrow. What should i expect? he says shooting for 2350 rpm under load. He also says i should run her at 2100rpm . I have been running at 1900 and cruising at 18 knots. BTW a 1976 46c. This fine boat is sorta new to me.

If you can run 18kts @ 1900rpm you either have a very empty (and light) boat, you are over-propped and can't make 2300rpm WOT, or someone has turned your 435hp 8v71ti's into 540hp 8v71TIB's. If they are built up then run them slow and make sure you don't overload them as they rarely make it past 1000 hrs. If they are the original 435hp 8v71TI's, you should turn 19-20kts @2100 rpm and 23-24kts @2300 with a clean bottom and not too much extra stuff on board. If you can make 2350 rpm then running @2100 won't kill them but running @1950-2000rpm would save you a bit of engine life and fuel.

I have the same boat but with fresh 550HP 6v92's. Mine is a bit on the heavy side but will still run 21-22kts @1950 and 26 kts WOT @2400. I am a bit under-propped but she is running fast enough for me and I'm not asking too much of those engines. She will run 24kts @ 2100 but that extra speed will cost me dearly in longevity.

Exxon XD-3 40wt is also acceptable if you have a Mobil-Exxon distributor near you. It is the replacement for the Mobil Delvac oils. Make sure that whatever you use has a sulfated ash content under 2%.

on that sulfated ash number.

Lower is better.

....for the correction. I should have actually looked at the specs and not just given them out off the top of my head.

Just got back from sea trial in a lovely winter wonderland here in the northeast. Starboard engine turned up at 2360 and port 2270 @ 23.6 knots at 2100 i was getting 20 knots. I do run the boat fairly light. No generator no tower, holding tank empty water tank empty and about 350 gallons of fuel. I will pull the boat this week to see why my port is not turning up to full rpm. Mechanic says is not in the engine. Just had props reconditioned 5 months ago. Anyone know the proper pitch ?? My spares props are not the same as one on the boat ? As i am posting this i don't remember the size and pitch, just that the spares are 1 size less in pitch. Thanks for any input.

jax.. almost hard to believe you find a decent price at West... I went there on saturday to get some cables, wires, etc... and experienced severe sticker shock. Prices up 10 to 20% from their still in use 2004 catalogue... which was already 10 to 20% more expensive than boatfix.com

I buy the DD oil from a DD parts place, they seem to cater to trucks and buses, under $40 per 5gal pail.

never seen the delo 100 at west, only the delo 400 which can no longer be used in older DDs

Hey PascalG,
I couldnt believe it either. Also the reason I bought all 35 gals they had.
I am NOT a West Marine fan due to their NEVER ENDING price increases.
Planning on taking a 5 day cruise down the St Johns River in January.
And what IS "winterizing"?? As a native Floridian,to me it means wearing long pants and maybe socks to go along with the t-shirt
