my 1976 42C has a Jabsco Vane pump that is used to transfer the fuel in the forward tank to the two rear tanks.Since I purchased the boat last fall this was the first time I had tried to transfer fuel.
The pump was getting very hot after only a few minutes of pumping and after checking both of the rear tanks fuel was flowing although slow . I replaced the vane pump with a new pump and although it takes longer the pump still overheats in about 5-6 minutes??
has anyone ever run into any problems with these vane pumps or does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be causing the pumps top overheat ??
any advise is appreciated.

Here are some possibles...
-voltage to pump is too low (wires too small, poor connections?)
-too much afterload (outflow obstruction to pump)
-too little preload (inflow obstruction to pump)
-housing or vanes warped (unlikely with new pump, though)
Good luck figuring this out.

Jim ,
thanks for your reply to my first post. You were absolutely correct , I found an obstruction and now the pump works fine ..transferred 100 gallons in about 12-15 minutes.. You saved me the cost of a new pump..
