While I know she already has the Kendall, I'd highly recommend the ipad2 with the cellar coverage thru Verizon.
We use ours extensively while cruising and rarely have coverage issues.

one of the best value in Wifi antenna/booster is the Wave Rogue. hook it up to a basic router and anyone on the boat can share a wifi connection, whether using a laptop, iPad, iPhone, Droid or Kindle.

obviuoulsy you need to have an access point to connect to (marina, etc...).

it's the best solution for those who don't want to pay a monthly subs. to a cel provider, it also works great in the bahamas where cel data is too expensive. I regularly get a couple of miles range.

We have the Wirie AP and are currently i n the Bahamas. I am typing on my computer wirelessly tied into my router (Wirie AP) and picking up our Bahamas Wimax signal 2 miles away (as far away as 4 miles for us so far). Could not have survived without it this summer with my college age girls on board. Easy to set up and work with (I am not a techie by any means) so just about anyone can use the device. I understand the Wave is just as good and functions pretty much the same way.
