Good afternoon all. I was hoping that someone here could help me identify what Hp rating these 6V92 are. Would this information be obtained from the hull numbers on the transom? I'm looking at a 1983 43C, and the old man that's selling me the boat has no idea what the Hp rating is. Long story short, he acquired the boat from a deceased relative and he is basically overwhelmed with this monster, and he approached me with an offer I basically can't pass up. Right now I'm going through the boat and checking all systems and electronics to find out just what we have on our hands. There is currently no paper on the 92's but there is a shop manual. I did manage to find a drawer full of operators manuals for various items, but nothing on the motors. Thanks for any advise you may have

Often on the valve covers you will find injector numbers. Those along with the serial numbers of the engines should provide you with enough info to get the H.P. from either D.D. or maybe on line.

Check on the valve covers, should be a s/n and hp rating

They should be either 450HP or 500HP depending on what was ordered. Call Hatteras or SAM's marine and give them your hull ID# They can tell you what the original engines were. Give us some details about the boat and we came help you figure out what you are getting into. Any idea how many hours on them, any rebuild info, how long since they last ran, is she in the water now? Any pictures you can post would be helpful. Make sure the engines and hull are sound. What seems like a great deal could end up costing you a great deal more than the boat is worth if you're not careful.

I had 475 hp DD's in my last boat

My 6v92's are 465hp and the hull number after mine are 485hp, so there were several versions of varying hp. As stated, call Hatteras to find out what she was delivered with.

The injectors may have been changed along the way. Hopefully the valve cover info states the current injector size. My boat came with 8v53's. Now it has 6v92's. Be certain of what is in the boat.

Well, I've got a call into Hatteras and Paul is searching the micofish records for me and will be back in touch shortly. Sam's was a no go, because they could only tell me what the mains are, and I already know that. I took a pics this weekend and discovered that the id plates on the valve covers appear to be removed. The holders are there but the plates are gone. I'm going to remove the the starboard saloon sleeper to get at the starboard engine hatch and take a closer look at the starboard outboard turbo sometime this week.

well It appears that I'm shut down with the URL pic posting until I reach the 15 posts or more milestone.

Fred, is the valve cover information supposed to be stamped into a id plate and held in place by those id plate holders, that are empty? Cause that's all I can locate on these valve covers...

Yep. It is not uncommon for those plates to be missing.

The serial numbers will tell you what was originally delivered from Detroit, and Hatt will know what THEY delivered. What's in the engine, on the other hand, may be different.

You can remove a valve cover and get the number off one of the injectors - there's a little circular plate on them that has the number on it. With that plus the serial number on the engine any Detroit Dealer should be able to tell you what the current output is (assuming proper tuning, etc) on the engines. You don't have to remove anything other than the cover to be able to see the numbers on the injectors themselves. A 12-point wrench will engage the spline bolts on the valve cover bolts (two)

Thats a 3/8 - 12 point socket, When you put them back on, they are self limiting so you dont break the valve cover! ws

My plates were also missing. The serial number is stamped into each block. If your standing in between both motors the serial info for your port motor will be forward top corner on the inboard side. The starboard info will be in the same place but on the outboard side of the boat. The numbers tell you model and there original purpose and also rotation . My set was actualy agricultural and not marine. As stated before in other posts if the injectors were changed this could or may have changed horsepower. You stated you had found a 92 series manual in that manual it tells you how to brake down the stamped Id numbers also were they are located. My 6v92's were shipped at 535 horsepower from detroit but tweaked up a bit by Covington to 550. There in a 1989 41c. Let's us know how you makeout.

Well I heard back from Paul at Hatteras. He managed to locate the build sheet for 43C 397, and the boat was delivered with the 535 Hp versions of the 92's. He went on to inform me that in 1983 the 43C was offered with two engine versions, the standard and the High Performance versions with the latter having High Performance painted on the side of the house and double stripes top of flybridge and boot. The Hp ratings were 500 and 535 Hp respectfully. So now I have to pull a cover and see if the injectors were upgraded and get with DD and find out which injectors were used in the 535 Hp version back in 1983.
