  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' TRIPLE CABIN (1970 - 1976)
Okay, it's time to prove I really do own a 58TC. I don't have but this handful of shots of the exterior, and I burned all the ones of the interior!

You will notice the "disco" ceiling is still in place on these pics as well as that luxurious indoor outdoor carpet in the upper salon/pilothouse. It's all stripped out, and I'll be a busy boy once my engine is rebuilt and the mess is gone.

I've had people tell me I should have taken pictures of the red velvet covered trim on the white padded vinyl that covered the master, the red fuzzy headboard, the pink shaded swag lamps port and starboard (would have left all that in place if I could have found some red lightbulbs), the white mobile home chest of drawers, the window shaker AC mounted in the starboard side of the master, and the mirrored panels on the folding doors on the closet!

Then there was the infamous "disco" drop ceiling on the upper salon (which I would have left in place if I could have found a 32v mirror ball and a full size John Travolta cut-out), all that god awful indoor outdoor carpet, the red formica that covered the cabinet doors, counters, and table, the green wallpaper that covered the cabinets themselves, and the floral patterned seat covers on the dinette!

As for my response to those who said I should have taken "before" pictures, I told them those images were permanently burned into my brain, and that was good enough for me! Besides, I didn't want anybody else to see what I had seen!

The first time my mechanic boarded the boat when all this stuff was still there, he said "hey, this was the 'ship' in the day!". Truth is, tacky as it was, it was all professionally done. I guess there is just no accounting for taste. It would have done Don Johnson proud!

WOW Those pictures look alot better than when I was on your boat  What year where they taken 1995 :D and I can't see that abortion slider extention thingy mabob  Hey lets get that baby running on both so we can have our Fort Myers Rondezvouse ;)

"Abortion slider extention thingy mabob"? What the heck are you talking about Bubbamigo? You ain't having flashbacks to that neutering you got where they used the wrong instrument are ya? No wonder your voice changed, I didn't know you had an abortion!!!

Was it Leon's? :D

Freebird, what year is your boat? I noticed your engine room vents are much different than in my 1977 58 YF.

Dang son, you and the misses get your glasses mixed up again? Just kidding as I have the info on my signature.

Yep, it's a '74 58 Triple Cabin. The 58YF is a whole different animal, so don't be feeling like you missed anything in the vent department. The full beam engine room on a 58TC is beneath the salon, and it is accessible either through hatches in the floor or through the galley by raising the steps. I'm not intimately familiar with the 58YF, but I know it has separate walk-in engine rooms which I'm sure required the different vents.

You can go onto the brochures archive which shows up on the home page for this site. That will show you how things looked from the factory on any Hatteras ever made. I use this section a lot when I've been looking around at different models, or when I want to see how things used to look when some PO thought he knew more about interior design that Hatteras did!

Yes, her "glass" was full of Soco and it gave me a foggy head! Sorry I got hung up on the prelim stuff -- red headed step child, etc. - and didn't see the 58TC. Thanks for the response, though.

Hope you know I was just playing with you about not seeing my signature.

Hey, I used to drink Southern Comfort, but when I turned 13 I switched to Crown! :D

Randy, Your 58 looks GREAT from the pics! I'm sure you'll have the interior all spiffed up once your mechanic finishes his dirty deed. I LOVE the bar on your aft deck! :D

I see from your pics that you SEEM to have the ORIGINAL teak swim platform still on your boat!!! The original teak one is a RARE AND ELUSIVE being, one that I have been hunting for some time. Most people have had to replace them from damage over the years and almost all have opted for a fiberglass platform for durability, repairability and lack of maintenance. Hatteras went to a fiberglass platform for 1975 models and never made another teak one for production. My boat is a 1972 and had that teak platform as well but it was damaged beyond repair and I am still trying to figure out what to replace it with. I know of an excellent woodworker that will reproduce the original teak one for me, but I need to provide specs to him. I have called and Hatteras has no info on them. There are many aftermarket suppliers that have reproductions of the original fiberglass platform, but I BELEIVE that the original teak ones such as yours were shaped a bit differently with more curve on the edges. Several members on this forum helped me with this issue over a year ago, but nobody had the original early curved teak platform. If I go through the trouble of having one custom made, you can BET that I will have it done to the exact OE specs (if I can get them).

I have the rare Hatteras "script" style logo on my wingboards which identifies the boat as an early 70's model. Most SERIOUS old Hatt guys will know that the Hatteras "check" logo lasted through 1971 and the script logo was only for a few years ('72-'73/'74) until they went to a slanted box-style logo for 1975 that lasted through the 80's. ALL script logo boats came with teak swim platforms originally, so I am having a bit of a problem with the idea of "updating" to a fiberglass swim platform.

When will you be on your boat again? Could I trouble you for some pics and measurements? I know that I really should let this one go and just buy a fiberglass replacement and be done with it and I may still do that, but I LOVE the look of the teak and that is what came on my boat. I know I'll HATE myself as soon as I bust it up on a dock somewhere, but I still may want to risk it!

Byron, out of curiosity how would you have your teak platform finished? Let her go au natural grey, or do some kind of finish on it to keep it golden? The reason I ask is because if you were happy with the grey look, you might be able to make a strip plank-type platform like the original teak out of the simulated manufactured lumber products like Trex or something. It would have that kind of natural tan/grey color full-time and need no maintenance. Never seen that kind of synthetic lumber on a boat before, but that shouldn't matter. Plenty of people use Starboard, and that's got to be a fairly similar synthetic. Just a thought.

Paul, that is an excellent question and I do not even know for sure. Of course I love the look of oiled teak, but the maintenance is a killer. I would probably NOT oil, and just spray it down with cleaner/brightner every several months to keep it looking fresh and blonde. I had not really thought of the new engineered lumber though. Honestly, if I don't go all the way and have an exact duplicate of the original made in teak, I'll just buy the exact reproduction fiberglass one and call it a day. That is really what I should do but I am still torn. Thanks for the suggestion!!

If you were able to get the radius just right on the first few (closest to stern) strip members crosswise (port-to-stbd, say), it would be fairly easy to build, I'd think. All bets are off, though, if you can't get that curve right. Maybe it's as simple as using the angle brackets that those nearside members would sit on (the ones bolted to the transom) to retain it in the right curve and just fit each successive strip to those with it in-place. Wouldn't be that bad a project on the hard.

Thanks SwissMiss, it really is in good shape. Just needs a little fluff and buff on the outside and a whole new interior. After that, look out, the 'bird is on the loose!

Yeah, that bar is a work of art and will be the sole surviving piece of furniture that I kept from the PO. It has a under-counter ice maker on the right side, and an under-counter fridge on the left, and a sink up top in the middle with glass and bottle storage on the side. Not that I will ever use it, it just looks nice! :D

As for my ORIGININAL CURVED TO MATCH THE HULL TEAK PLATFORM, hee hee hee, what's it worth to ya NeutralNate? Hell, I'd be happy to let you pop off a pattern, for a nominal fee or a huge discount on a used car, or maybe a family size bottle of Grey Goose to baptise the bar when you come down.

You may recall from my thread "Maiden Voyage From Hell" that I gave a tennybopper "the wrong line first" (Pascal) who proceeded to untie me in a 4 knot current with the engine, note singular term, switched off. The end result was my platform doesn't look now like it did when the picture was taken. The boat came back faster than I could cuss her, and it smashed into a piling. I had some guy come out weeks ago to write an estimate. I told him money was no object as the marina will be paying for it. I just wanted it fixed ASAP! He said he could make it look like new, and I haven't seem him since. Welcome to Florida.

Seriously, sort of, I'll be glad to help you with measurements etc. to help your boat look as good as mine. Just remember, you'll owe me one, and I just LOVE the thought of having you over a barrel! :D

Just always thinkin', FreeHole, and trying to help out my fellow Hatt brethren.

Actually gents, it is the OUTER curves on each end of the platform that are of utmost concern to me. The transom curvature did not change for all 1510's, so that is easy to duplicate. The strong curves on the teak platforms are more pronounced (IMHO) than on the later fiberglass platforms. They squared off the edges more and more as time went by, or so it seems.

You are right, a big piece of cardboard or stencil paper would do the trick. Next time I'm in your neck of the woods I'll drop by. Just tell Paul not to call the cops when he sees some guy hanging off the platform trying to scribe a line......

Hey, folks are used to seeing people hanging off my platform!

I just hope Pat calls the cops if he sees Paul within eyesite of Freebird when I'm not around!

I'll have my new furniture, headliners, carpet, and bamboo down by the time you show up, and I don't want any Jello stains on my new interior! :D

Sorry Paul, that was my bad. I meant if Pat saw me on the platform, not Paul! I got my "P's" crossed!

Just what I would expect from a LSU gradiate. Lost Sometimes Unintentionally! :D
