  1. This has been one interesting issue

    Well to finish this thread off......I'm finally back up and running...no more white smoke. But basically what happened was that the Aftercooler was in fact caked with oil. Got that cleaned replaced and squared away but still had a white smoke problem. Higher the RPM, the worse the smoke was. To make a long story short, the mechanic sensed something going on with the blower or the oil lines or seals in the blower. He does an inspection and finds that one of the lobes is galling the inside of the blower housing (this would explain the high aluminum content in the last oil analysis). So we go down the re-man blower route. What he finds out is that 2 of the retaining screws on that lobe are gone and this is where the oil has been coming from, plus it allowed this lobe to travel forward and back some.

    Boat ran well today and I got back those 75 RPM that this engine has been mising. I'm jiust a little worried about those 2 missing screws. This mechanic says not to worry, they're somewhere in the old blower.... True?? Thx.

  2. Re: Is an Aftercooler the same as an Air Cooler on an 892?

    Well, they're either in the blower or in the airbox. The latter I hope he looked for while it was apart!

  3. Re: Is an Aftercooler the same as an Air Cooler on an 892?

    He used 2 cans of brake cleaner and wet vac'd the airbox to clean it up some. I'm gonna go to sleep tonight believing they're in the old blower. :}

    He wetvac'd brake cleaner?! Oi.

    He's either a lot braver - or far more stupid - than me.

    Some brake cleaner is quite flammable. The stuff that isn't is some of the nastiest stuff you could EVER inhale, and using a shop vac on it is guaranteed to aerosolize the shit and you will inhale a LOT of it.

    If you have an explosion proof electric motor in that shopvac, you are lucky, if not then he just hit the equivelent of the lottery since most of the brake cleaners are extremely explosive! This is one of those safety things that people often ignore. Mr. Rocket Scientist could have torched himself and your boat. Do not repeat this procedure, and make sure he has adult supervision next time.

    I have found that a magnet works pretty good on lose nuts and bolts, LOL

    Yeah, that nice cinnamon smell in the salon was long gone when I got there. I'm hoping I'm done with this issue. Thx.
